How to Disassemble an Office Chair
Admin October 13, 2026
Disassembling an office chair requires following steps based on its structural characteristics. Most modular office chairs can be disassembled, but safety precautions must be taken, and special structures should not be forcibly disassembled.

I. Preparation Before Disassembly
- Confirm Chair Type: Modular office chairs (such as those with adjustable height, armrests, and backrests) are generally designed for disassembly, while fixed-installed classroom chairs or integrated public seating are not recommended for disassembly.
- Tool Preparation: Prepare tools such as screwdrivers, rubber mallets (or wooden boards), and gloves to avoid injury from direct hand operation.
- Environmental Safety: Choose a flat and open area to prevent parts from scattering or the chair from tipping over during disassembly.
II. Specific Disassembly Steps
- Backrest Separation
- Observe the connection method between the backrest and the seat (usually screw-fixed or snap-fit).
- If screw-fixed, use the corresponding screwdriver to loosen the screws counterclockwise and remove the backrest; if snap-fit, gently press the snap or use a tool to pry it open, being careful not to damage plastic parts during separation.
- Base Removal
- Raise the gas lift to its highest position to ensure there is no additional resistance between the base and the seat.
- Hold the edge of the seat with one hand and press the height adjustment lever (usually located under the seat) with the other hand while gently rocking the base to gradually loosen and separate it from the gas lift.
- Gas Lift Removal
- Invert the chair base (with the casters facing upwards) to expose the gas lift.
- Gently tap the connection between the gas lift and the chair base with a rubber mallet. If a rubber mallet is not available, place a wooden board under the gas lift and tap the board with a regular hammer to loosen the gas lift through vibration and remove it.
- Note: The gas lift contains high-pressure gas. Avoid piercing its surface with sharp tools during disassembly to prevent gas from spraying out and causing injury.
- Disassembly of Other Parts
- Armrests: If screw-fixed, loosen the screws and remove them; if snap-fit, press the snap or slide to unlock.
- Headrest: Usually connected to the backrest via pins or screws. Pull out the pins or loosen the screws to separate them.
- Casters: Some casters are screwed onto the chair base. Loosen the screws and remove them; if they are directly inserted, use a tool (such as a screwdriver) to pry the edge of the caster to separate it from the chair base.
III. Precautions
- Safety First: Wear gloves during disassembly to avoid scratches; do not use excessive force when the gas lift and chair base are tightly connected to prevent parts from flying off.
- Record Steps: Take photos to record the connection methods of each part before disassembly for easier reassembly later.
- Disassemble Only When Necessary: The gas lift and chair base may be tightly fitted after long-term use. If not for repair or part replacement, it is recommended to leave them as they are.
