How to Disassemble an Office Chair
Admin October 16, 2026
Disassembling an office chair requires careful operation. Follow the steps below, paying special attention to safety and the disassembly techniques for key components:

I. Preparation Before Disassembly
- Tool Preparation: Cross-head screwdriver, rubber mallet (or a piece of wood), lubricant (such as WD-40 for rusty screws), gloves (to prevent scratches).
- Environment Cleanup: Ensure the floor is level to prevent the chair from tipping over during disassembly. Move any clutter around the chair legs to create operating space.
- Component Identification: An office chair typically consists of chair legs, casters, base, seat, gas lift, backrest, armrests, and headrest. Before disassembly, identify how each component is connected (screwed, snapped, or via a pneumatic mechanism).
II. Step-by-Step Disassembly Process
Backrest Separation
- If the backrest is secured with screws, use a screwdriver to loosen all connecting screws counterclockwise, leaving 1-2 screws in place to prevent sudden detachment.
- If it's a snap-fit structure, hold both sides of the backrest firmly and pull upward evenly while gently rocking it side to side to assist in separation.
Seat and Gas Lift Separation
- Key Challenge: The seat and gas lift are usually fixed with high-intensity pressure, and direct pulling can easily damage the components.
- Operation Method: Raise the gas lift to its highest position. Hold the edge of the seat firmly with one hand and continuously press the height adjustment lever (usually located under the seat) with the other hand while slowly rocking the seat. Use the lever principle to gradually loosen the connection. If there is too much resistance, spray a small amount of lubricant onto the connection.
Gas Lift and Chair Leg Separation
- Safety Tip: The gas lift contains high-pressure gas. Do not strike it with sharp tools to prevent explosion risks.
- Operation Method: Invert the chair legs (with the gas lift pointing downward) and gently tap the top of the gas lift with a rubber mallet. If you don't have a rubber mallet, place a piece of wood at the connection between the gas lift and the chair legs and gently strike the wood with a regular hammer to reduce the impact through cushioning. If it still cannot be separated, try soaking the chair legs in warm water (only for metal materials) to make them expand slightly and then disassemble.
Disassembly of Other Components
- Armrests/Headrest: Usually secured with screws, loosen them counterclockwise to remove.
- Casters: Some casters are directly inserted into the holes in the chair legs and can be removed by pulling outward forcefully. If they are secured with screws, use a screwdriver to disassemble.
III. Precautions
- Wear gloves during disassembly to avoid scratches from metal components.
- Keep all screws and small parts and store them separately to prevent loss.
- If you encounter rusty or stuck components, do not force disassembly. It is recommended to spray lubricant and wait for 10-15 minutes before operating.
- When assembling, follow the reverse order to ensure that all components are firmly connected.
