How to Disassemble and Wash Office Chairs

Admin October 19, 2026

Disassembling and washing office chairs requires handling each component separately. Here are the specific steps:

I. Disassembly of the Backrest and Seat Cushion

  1. Headrest Removal: If the headrest is secured with two screws, use a screwdriver to unscrew them and then remove the headrest. If it has a snap-fit design, simply press the snap and pull it upwards.
  2. Armrest Removal: Check the connection points between the armrests and the backrest frame or seat cushion frame, which are usually secured with screws. Use the appropriate screwdriver to unscrew them, and be sure to keep the screws safe to prevent loss.
  3. Separation of the Backrest from the Base: The backrest and base are often secured with three screws. Lay the office chair down or place it on its side for easier operation. After unscrewing, gently shake the backrest frame to separate it from the base, avoiding excessive force that could damage the components.
  4. Seat Cushion Removal: The seat cushion is usually connected to the gas lift and chair legs. First, separate the gas lift from the seat cushion. For some designs, you may need to unscrew the screws at the bottom of the seat cushion or press the snap-fit mechanism, and then lift the seat cushion upwards. If the gas lift is tightly fixed to the chair legs, gently rotate the seat cushion to assist in separation.

II. Caster Removal and Cleaning

  1. Caster Disassembly: Turn the office chair upside down (with the seat facing downwards). Most casters have a snap-fit design. Hold the caster bracket with your hand and pull it outwards with even force. If the snap-fit is tight, use a flat-head screwdriver with a soft cloth (to avoid scratching the bracket) to gently pry open the edge of the snap-fit. Once the caster is loose, remove it.
  2. Debris Removal: Use tweezers to pick out hair, fibers, and other debris from the gaps along the direction of caster rotation, preventing blockages in the bearings. Then, use an old toothbrush dipped in a small amount of neutral detergent to gently brush the surface of the casters and the gaps in the bearings, removing dust and grease.
  3. Rinsing and Drying: Rinse the casters with clean water (be careful to avoid water getting into the bearings). Wipe off the water with a dry cloth and place them in a well-ventilated area to dry for 10 minutes, ensuring they are completely dry to prevent rust.
  4. Lubrication and Reassembly: Apply 1-2 drops of special lubricant for office equipment to the bearings and rotate the casters by hand to distribute the lubricant evenly. Align the casters with the snap-fits on the brackets and gently push them in until you hear a 'click' sound, confirming they are securely installed. Then, turn the office chair back upright and push it to test if the casters roll smoothly.

Precautions: It is recommended to take photos of the connection positions of the components before disassembly for easier reassembly. If any components are aged or damaged, replace them with new parts before assembling.
