How to Disassemble an Office Chair

Admin October 11, 2026

Disassembling an office chair requires careful operation. You can refer to the following steps:

I. Understanding the Components of an Office Chair

An office chair typically consists of chair legs, casters, a base, a seat, a gas lift, a backrest, armrests, a headrest, etc. There may be some differences in the structure of office chairs of different styles and brands, but the overall composition is roughly the same. Knowing the positions and connection methods of each component is helpful for subsequent disassembly work.

II. Specific Disassembly Steps

  1. Separating the Backrest First, separate the backrest from the seat. Usually, the backrest and the seat are connected by screws or clips. Use appropriate tools (such as a screwdriver) to loosen the screws or unclip the clips, and then you can remove the backrest from the seat. During the operation, be sure to keep the removed small parts like screws well to avoid losing them.
  2. Removing the Base Raise the gas lift to its highest position. Hold the seat cushion with one hand and press the height-adjustment lever with the other hand while gently shaking it several times to loosen the connection between the base and the gas lift, thus removing the base. This step requires a certain amount of strength and skill. Shake evenly to avoid damaging the components due to excessive force.
  3. Removing the Gas Lift Invert the chair legs and gently tap out the gas lift with a rubber mallet. If you don't have a rubber mallet, you can place a piece of wood underneath and then tap the wood with another hard object. The buffering effect of the wood can help remove the gas lift. Since the gas rod and the chair legs may be tightly fastened after long-term use, pay extra attention to safety during disassembly to prevent the gas lift from suddenly popping out and causing injury.
  4. Disassembling Other Parts For other parts such as armrests and headrests, loosen the screws with corresponding tools according to the installation order to disassemble them. During disassembly, carefully observe the connection methods of each component to avoid damaging them due to improper operation.

III. Precautions

After long-term use, the gas rod and the chair legs may be tightly fastened. Pay attention to safety during disassembly and wear protective gloves and other protective equipment. If it is not absolutely necessary, try not to disassemble the office chair, because incorrect disassembly and installation may affect its performance and service life.
