How to Deflate an Office Chair

Admin October 19, 2026

There are several main methods for deflating an office chair:

Method 1: Deflate by Removing Base Screws Select a screwdriver of the appropriate size and unscrew the four screws on the chair base one by one to separate the base from the gas lift. Use pliers to pull out the plastic clip on the air pump, exposing the internal structure. Use a long, thin Phillips screwdriver to press down firmly on the protruding metal pin on the air pump. As the metal pin descends, the air pump will gradually release air until it is fully deflated. After deflation, reassemble the chair, adjust the height to the desired position, and thread a wire through the plastic tube and wrap it around the gas lift to secure the chair's position. This method requires ensuring that the screwdriver size matches to avoid damaging the components.

Method 2: Operate through the Gas Lift's Deflation Port Locate the deflation port of the gas lift (usually located at the bottom or side) and gently unscrew it with a suitable tool (such as a small wrench or screwdriver). After opening it, slowly press down on the gas lift to control the speed of gas release and prevent a sudden drop in pressure that could destabilize the chair's structure. Continuously observe the pressure changes during deflation to ensure it drops to a safe level. After completion, close the deflation port and check the tightness to prevent gas leakage. This method is suitable for gas lifts with clearly located deflation ports and requires careful operation.

Method 3: Deflate Using the Button on the Chair Base Some office chairs are designed with a dedicated deflation button on the base. Pressing the button slowly releases the gas, and the chair's height decreases accordingly. This method is simple to operate and does not require disassembling any components, but you need to confirm whether the chair has this function. If the button fails or does not respond, try other methods.

Method 4: Deflate by Pressing the Internal Iron Pin of the Gas Lift Remove the four large screws from the chair base, use pliers to take out the white clip, exposing the protruding iron rod inside (about 5 millimeters). Use a fine Torx screwdriver to press down firmly on the iron pin and deform it inward. Insert a thin iron pin (such as an aluminum skewer) into the iron rod area and trim the sharp ends to prevent slippage. Use a lifting wrench to press down on the top of the iron pin, slowly lift and press down, and continue the operation until no sound is heard after hearing the air hiss. Control the deflation speed to avoid a sudden drop in pressure. This method involves multiple steps and requires patience during operation.
