How to Clean Office Chairs

Admin October 16, 2026

Cleaning office chairs requires a step-by-step approach based on the components and type of stains. Here are the specific methods:

I. Cleaning the Casters/Wheels

  1. Handling Hair Entanglement: If hair or fibers get stuck in the wheels, first flip the chair over, hold the wheel bracket with your hand, and pull it out (no tools needed for snap-on designs). Use tweezers to remove hair from the gaps or trim the entangled parts with small scissors. This step prevents further jamming of the bearings by hair, ensuring smooth rotation.
  2. Cleaning Dirt:
    • Wrap the wheels with a damp and then air-dried face towel, and move the chair back and forth to transfer the dirt onto the towel. This is suitable for surface dust.
    • For stubborn dirt, use an old toothbrush dipped in neutral detergent to scrub the wheel surface and bearing gaps. Rinse with water, then dry and air-dry. Avoid using strong alkaline cleaners to prevent corrosion of the wheel material.
  3. Anti-Stain Tips: Wrap the wheels with invisible tape (choose a type with moderate adhesion that leaves no residue when removed) to reduce direct contact between stains and the ground, lowering the frequency of cleaning.

II. Cleaning the Seat Surface and Overall Chair

  1. Deep Cleaning Process:
    • First, use a vacuum cleaner to thoroughly remove surface dust and debris from the gaps, preventing dust from damaging the fabric or leather through friction.
    • Spray professional foam cleaner (choose according to the material, such as fabric-specific or leather-specific), let it penetrate the fibers, and leave it for 5-10 minutes. Then, gently brush the stains with a soft-bristled brush.
    • Finally, disinfect with a high-temperature steam device (confirm the material is heat-resistant) to kill bacteria and remove odors.
  2. Daily Wiping: Wipe from top to bottom in the order of "backrest โ†’ seat cushion โ†’ armrests โ†’ chair legs" with a slightly damp cloth that does not drip water, preventing water stains from seeping into the interior and causing mold or deformation. For leather materials, use a dedicated conditioner for maintenance to prevent cracking.

III. Maintenance of the Casters

After cleaning, air-dry the wheels for 10 minutes. Apply 1-2 drops of dedicated lubricant (such as WD-40 or sewing machine oil) to the bearings, rotate the wheels to distribute the oil evenly, and reduce friction noise. Finally, reposition and test for smooth rotation to ensure no jamming.

Precautions:

  • Clean once a month and lubricate regularly to extend the lifespan of the casters to 2-3 years.
  • Before cleaning, confirm the chair material (such as fabric, leather, plastic) to avoid using corrosive cleaners.
  • If the wheels are severely damaged, it is recommended to contact the manufacturer for original replacement parts to ensure safety.
