What to Do If the Wheels of an Office Chair Are Dirty
Admin October 08, 2026
Dirty office chair wheels can be cleaned through simple cleaning, disassembly cleaning, or by using preventive tips. Here are the specific methods:

Simple Cleaning Method
- Dealing with Hair Entanglement: If the wheels are entangled with hair, use a very small pair of scissors to carefully cut the tangled hair. This method is time-consuming but can precisely remove the hair.
- Cleaning with Facial Wipes: Wet a used facial wipe and let it air-dry slightly. Wrap the textured side around the wheel and secure it with a rubber band. Sit on the chair and move it back and forth, allowing the wheel to rub against the facial wipe. The dirt will transfer to the wipe. Repeat this process several times until the wheel is clean, and then wipe the floor with a cloth.
Disassembly Cleaning Method
- Disassembling the Wheels: Turn the office chair upside down with the seat facing down, taking care to protect the seat fabric. Hold the wheel bracket with your hand and gently pull the wheel outward. Most office chair wheels are designed with snap-in mechanisms and do not require tools. If the wheel is stuck tightly, use a flat-head screwdriver with a soft cloth underneath to gently pry the edge of the snap-in mechanism and remove the wheel. Place all the wheels on a table and inspect them one by one.
- Removing Debris: Use tweezers to follow the rotation direction of the wheel and pick out long hair strands and carpet fibers from the gaps to prevent further entanglement. Dip an old toothbrush in a small amount of neutral detergent and gently scrub the surface of the wheel and the bearing gaps to remove dust and grease. Rinse the wheel with water, taking care to keep the bearing part dry, then wipe it dry with a cloth and let it air-dry in a well-ventilated area for 10 minutes.
- Lubricating and Reassembling: After the wheel is dry, apply 1 - 2 drops of special lubricating oil for office equipment to the bearing. Avoid using cooking oil to prevent dust absorption. Turn the wheel by hand to evenly distribute the lubricating oil. Align the wheel with the bracket snap-in mechanism and gently push it in until you hear a 'click' to confirm it is securely installed. Finally, turn the office chair back upright and push it to test if the wheels move smoothly. If there is still stuttering, check for any remaining debris.
Preventive Tips
Stick invisible tape on the wheels, choosing tape with an appropriate width and moderate stickiness. When sticking, do not make it too flat; a slightly wrinkled appearance can prevent the wheels from being too slippery. This method can be completed in just over a minute, is easy to replace, and eliminates the need to clean each wheel individually.
