How to Clean a Dirty Office Chair
Admin October 08, 2026
The cleaning method for a dirty office chair should be selected based on the material and type of stain, as follows:

I. General Cleaning Process
For most materials, office chairs should be cleaned in a top-to-bottom order, such as the backrest, seat cushion, armrests, and legs, or the seat surface, backrest, chair feet, and edges. Use a slightly damp, non-dripping cloth for wiping to avoid water stains, and change the side or replace the cloth for each area to prevent cross-contamination. It is recommended to wear gloves and a mask before cleaning to avoid direct contact with cleaning agents or dust, and to prevent the cloth from falling to the ground and causing secondary contamination.
II. Cleaning Methods by Material
Mesh Office Chairs
- First, use a vacuum cleaner to remove dust particles from the surface and crevices to avoid scratching the mesh during subsequent cleaning.
- Dilute a neutral cleaning agent in a 1:10 ratio and spray it on the stains, allowing them to decompose for 3-5 minutes.
- Use a sauna machine or high-temperature cleaning machine to alternately extract and wash at least twice, while using a water absorber to accelerate drying and prevent mold growth on the mesh.
- For deep cleaning, perform brushing, pre-treatment (for stubborn stains), water circulation cleaning, steam sterilization, and disinfection in sequence to ensure thorough removal of stains and bacteria.
Fabric Chairs
- Do not brush directly, as this may cause the fabric to fuzz or deform. Use a slightly damp cloth to gently wipe the stained area, and treat stubborn stains with a diluted neutral cleaning agent.
- After cleaning, be sure to dry the moisture with a dry cloth or use a hairdryer on a low-temperature setting from a distance to avoid moisture penetration and internal mold growth.
Leather Chairs
- Use a soft cloth dampened with a small amount of water or a dedicated leather cleaning agent to gently wipe away dust.
- For stains, gently wipe with a damp cloth and allow to air dry naturally, avoiding exposure to sunlight or high-temperature baking to prevent the leather from cracking.
- Regularly wipe with leather conditioner to extend the lifespan and maintain the luster.
Solid Wood Chairs
- Use a dry cloth to wipe away surface dust, and use cotton swabs for crevices.
- For oil stains, apply a small amount of neutral cleaning agent and gently wipe with a slightly damp cloth, then immediately dry to prevent moisture penetration and mold growth or deformation.
- Avoid using irritating solvents such as alcohol or gasoline to prevent damage to the wood grain or paint finish.
III. Precautions
- Regular cleaning (especially inside mesh chairs) can prevent dust mite infestation. It is recommended to perform deep cleaning every 1-2 months.
- Maintain ventilation after cleaning to accelerate drying and avoid bacterial growth in humid environments.
- If stains are difficult to remove or the chair material is special (such as velvet or faux leather), it is recommended to contact a professional cleaning agency for treatment.
