How to Classify Office Chairs

Admin October 10, 2026

Office chairs can mainly be classified in two ways: by function and scenario, and by design concept.

Classification by Function and Scenario: Office chairs can be divided into narrow-sense and broad-sense office chairs. Narrow-sense office chairs specifically refer to backrest chairs used by individuals in a seated position while performing desk work. Their design is simple and straightforward, with the core task of helping users maintain a basically correct sitting posture and avoiding physical fatigue or injury caused by prolonged incorrect sitting. These chairs are usually compact in structure and suitable for fixed scenarios such as individual workstations. Broad-sense office chairs cover all types of seating required for various roles within an office, including executive chairs, staff chairs, and conference chairs. Different types have their own design and functional focuses based on scenario needs: for example, executive chairs are typically equipped with wider seats, adjustable armrests, and headrests to meet the needs of managers for long hours of work; staff chairs emphasize portability and basic support functions, suitable for daily office work; conference chairs highlight features such as stackability and ease of movement, facilitating flexible use of conference room space.

Classification by Design Concept: Office chairs can be divided into ordinary office chairs and ergonomic chairs. Ordinary office chairs have a relatively simple structure, with materials including leather, mesh, or solid wood, meeting the basic needs of short meetings or temporary office work. However, their design lacks targeted support; for example, the lumbar area usually only provides a basic backrest, and prolonged use can easily lead to lumbar fatigue, making them suitable for low-frequency or short-term use scenarios. Ergonomic chairs, on the other hand, actively adapt to the human body's curves through scientific design. Their core functions include:

  1. Lumbar Support: The lumbar support can precisely fit the third and fourth lumbar vertebrae, reducing the burden on the intervertebral discs by distributing pressure and minimizing the risk of lumbar muscle strain caused by prolonged sitting;
  2. Multi-dimensional Adjustment Functions: Equipped with adjustable and rotating headrests, multi-directional adjustable armrests (supporting height, angle, and forward-backward movement), and seat depth adjustment, they meet the needs of users with different heights and body types;
  3. Breathable Material Selection: Using materials such as high-elastic mesh or special mesh fabrics, they achieve rapid heat dissipation and moisture wicking through the mesh structure, avoiding a stuffy feeling in summer and enhancing comfort during prolonged use. These chairs are suitable for users who need to work at a desk for long hours or have higher health requirements.
