How to Assemble and Disassemble Office Chairs

Admin October 12, 2026

The assembly and disassembly of office chairs should be carried out according to the installation and disassembly processes respectively, with the specific steps as follows:

Installation Steps

  1. Assemble the Chair Base and Gas Lift
Install the casters (universal wheels) one by one onto the ends of the five legs of the chair base, ensuring that the clips are secure. Then, insert the gas lift vertically into the center hole of the chair base and keep it upright. The gas lift is the core component for adjusting the chair's height, so it must be installed vertically to avoid wobbling during subsequent use.

  2. Secure the Base Plate and Seat
Use the provided screws to fix the base plate (including the height adjustment mechanism) to the bottom of the seat. Make sure the screws are fully tightened to prevent the base plate from loosening, which could cause the height adjustment function to fail. For some chairs with a clip-on design between the base plate and the seat, align the slots and press firmly to secure them.

  3. Connect the Backrest and Seat
Align the metal bracket or plastic clip of the backrest with the mounting holes at the back of the seat and secure them with screws or clips. During this step, check whether the backrest tilt adjustment mechanism is flexible to ensure that the backrest can recline or lock properly after installation.

  4. Install the Base and Accessories
Vertically slide the assembled seat part onto the top of the gas lift. A clicking sound indicates that the clip is in place. Finally, install the armrests (fixed to both sides of the seat with screws) and the headrest (if detachable, align it with the slot or screw hole at the top of the backrest for installation).

Disassembly Steps

  1. Separate the Backrest and Seat
If complete disassembly is required, first remove the screws of the armrests (remove them directly if the screws are on the back frame, or use tools for assistance if they are on the seat frame). Then, remove the fixing screws (usually 3) at the connection between the backrest and the seat. Lay the chair down and separate the back frame from the base plate.

  2. Remove the Base and Gas Lift
Raise the gas lift to its highest position. Hold the seat with one hand and continuously press the height adjustment lever while shaking the base with the other hand to gradually loosen the gas lift from the chair base. If the clip is too tight, you can use a rubber mallet to lightly tap the edge of the chair base to assist in separation.

  3. Extract the Gas Lift and Chair Base
Turn the chair base upside down and tap the bottom of the gas lift with a rubber mallet (if you don't have a rubber mallet, you can tap it with a wooden board underneath) to remove the gas lift from the center hole of the chair base. Control the force during this step to avoid damaging the chair base or the gas lift.

  4. Disassemble the Remaining Accessories
If the headrest is fixed with screws, unscrew the two fixing screws to remove it. For the armrests, choose the appropriate tools according to the screw positions for disassembly. Remove all the connecting screws between the base plate and the seat to complete the overall disassembly.

Precautions:

  • Avoid violent tapping when disassembling the gas lift to prevent the leakage of high-pressure gas inside.
  • The clips of chairs that have been used for a long time may be tight. You can spray a small amount of lubricant before disassembly.
  • If you lack professional tools, it is recommended to disassemble the headrest, armrests, and other easily operable parts first, and avoid forcibly disassembling the core structure.
