How to Adjust the Recline Angle of an Office Chair

Admin October 08, 2026

The methods for adjusting the recline angle of an office chair mainly fall into three categories: lever-type, knob-type, and electric-type, with specific operation and locking steps as follows:

Lever-type adjustment is a relatively common method. Typically, there is an adjustment lever located beneath the seat, operating on the principle of mechanical locking. To adjust, gently pull up the lever, which releases the locked state of the backrest. Slowly lean back, and the backrest will change its angle with your body movements. Once you reach a comfortable position, push the lever back into place, and the backrest will be locked at the current angle. This adjustment method is simple and straightforward, suitable for most traditional office chairs. However, be mindful of the force used when pulling up and pushing back the lever to avoid damaging the components due to excessive force.

Knob-type adjustment is often found on the side or rear of the chair, achieving angle adjustment by controlling the tightness of the gas spring. When rotating the knob, if turned clockwise, the gas spring tightens, increasing the resistance to leaning back and securing the backrest angle more firmly; if turned counterclockwise, the gas spring loosens, reducing the resistance to leaning back and allowing the backrest to adjust freely. To adjust, first rotate the knob to loosen the gas spring, lean back to the desired angle, and then rotate the knob in the opposite direction to the appropriate tightness to complete the locking. This method allows for more precise control over the resistance to leaning back, but it may require multiple attempts to find the optimal tightness.

Electric-type adjustment is a feature of high-end office chairs, enabling precise and stepless angle adjustment through buttons or a control panel. To operate, press the angle adjustment button on the control panel, and the backrest will slowly move to the set angle, automatically locking when the button is released. Some electric chairs also support preset angle functions, allowing you to set angles for different scenarios such as focused work, reading, and napping in advance, and switch between them with a single button press, greatly enhancing convenience of use.

There are clear goals for adjusting the recline angle based on different office activities: When focusing on work or typing, it is recommended to adjust the backrest to 90ยฐ - 100ยฐ, which helps maintain an upright body position and reduces pressure on the neck and shoulders; when reading or thinking, you can widen the angle to 100ยฐ - 110ยฐ, allowing your body to lean back slightly and relieve lower back fatigue; for napping or short breaks, it is suitable to adjust the angle to 110ยฐ - 130ยฐ, approaching a lying-down position to relax the entire body's muscles. When adjusting, consider your own comfort and avoid leaning back too far, which can lead to instability in your center of gravity.
