How to Adjust an Office Chair

Admin October 12, 2026

You can refer to the following methods to adjust your office chair to enhance comfort and reduce physical fatigue:

1. Adjust the Seat Height

  • Operation Method: Adjust the height using the hand-operated controls (such as a lever or knob). Some pneumatic lift chairs can be raised or lowered by repeatedly pushing the lever up and down.
  • Standard Posture: Ensure that your feet are flat on the ground, with your thighs and calves forming an angle of 95ยฐ to 100ยฐ, or your thighs being roughly parallel to the ground. If the chair is too high and your feet are dangling, use a footrest; if it is too low, it will increase the pressure on your knees.
  • Special Scenarios:
    • When using a computer, if the monitor height is not adjustable, adjust the chair so that your eyes are level with the screen.
    • When working at a desk, your elbows should be level with the desk.
    • When sitting for long periods, your feet must be flat on the floor.

2. Adjust the Seat Angle

  • Recline Angle: Maintain a slight recline (100ยฐ to 110ยฐ) to keep your back, especially your lower back, in contact with the chair back. If the chair has a lumbar support, adjust it to support the natural curve of your lumbar spine.
  • Lumbar Support: The lumbar support should be positioned at the 3rd to 5th lumbar vertebrae (about above the navel) to avoid a hollow lower back or excessive forward protrusion.

3. Adjust the Armrest Height

  • Standard Posture: The armrest height should allow your forearms to rest comfortably on the armrests or desk when your elbows are naturally hanging down, with the angle between your upper and lower arms close to 100ยฐ.
  • Special Cases: If the armrests prevent your knees from sliding under the desk, lower or remove them.

4. Other Auxiliary Adjustments

  • Monitor Height: Raise the screen so that your eyes are level with the top edge of the screen to avoid neck strain from looking down or leaning forward.
  • Dynamic Adjustment: Sitting in the same position for long periods can cause fatigue. It is recommended to make minor adjustments to the chair or stand up and move briefly every 30 minutes.

Precautions:

  • After adjustment, sit for 5 to 10 minutes to ensure there is no local pressure or muscle tension.
  • If the chair has limited functions (such as no lumbar support), you can use a cushion or rolled-up towel to support your lumbar spine.
  • Regularly check the stability of the chair to avoid accidental risks caused by loose components.

By scientifically adjusting your office chair, you can effectively improve your sitting posture, reduce the risk of occupational diseases such as lower back pain and cervical strain, and enhance work efficiency and health.
