How to Adjust Office Chair Height

Admin October 16, 2026

Adjusting the height of an office chair can be done through the following steps:

Step 1: Locate the Control Device
First, find the height adjustment control on the chair. If you are seated, try looking for a lever or knob under the seat or on the side. The common design is a lever-type, and some models require turning a knob. If you cannot determine the specific control lever, refer to the user manual that comes with the chair or try each lever's function one by one (be careful not to apply excessive force to avoid damage). For example, some pneumatic lift chairs require repeated up-and-down pushing of the lever for fine-tuning, while mechanical chairs may require turning the knob for gradual adjustment.

Step 2: Adjust the Seat Height
After confirming the control device, operate according to the type of chair:

  • Lever-type: For a regular pneumatic lift chair, when you pull up the lever, your body weight will naturally press down on the seat, and you can assist in adjusting the height by moving your body up and down at this time; the seat will be fixed when you release the lever. Some models require reverse operation, that is, press the lever down to lower the seat and pull the lever up to raise the seat.
  • Knob-type: Turn the knob clockwise or counterclockwise, and the seat will gradually rise or fall. Keep your body balanced during the adjustment process to avoid losing control due to sudden movement.
  • Pneumatic pump-type: Repeatedly and quickly push the lever up and down (similar to the action of "pumping air"), and the seat will continuously rise and fall until it reaches the desired height and then stop the operation.
It is recommended to control the adjustment range within a few centimeters each time to avoid physical discomfort caused by rapid height changes. After adjustment, be sure to confirm that the control lever is back in place to prevent the seat from moving accidentally.

Step 3: Standing Posture Assisted Calibration (Optional)
If it is difficult to adjust while seated, you can try standing operation:

  1. Get up and leave the chair, and adjust the chair to its lowest height.
  2. Slowly pull up the lever to raise the seat until the front end is just below the knees (at this time, the thighs are parallel to the ground).
  3. Sit back down and test to ensure that your feet are flat on the ground, your knees are bent at a 90-degree angle, and your back naturally fits against the backrest.
This method can avoid height misjudgment caused by sitting posture deviations and is especially suitable for first-time users or those who have changed chair models.

Precautions:

  • Before adjustment, check whether the pneumatic rod or mechanical structure of the chair is intact to avoid using damaged parts.
  • Keep your body stable during the adjustment process to prevent falling due to sudden movement of the chair.
  • If the chair height cannot meet your needs (such as being too high or too low), it may be that the pneumatic rod is damaged or the model does not match. You need to contact after-sales service for repair or replacement of parts.
