How to Adjust Office Chair Height
Admin October 22, 2026
Adjusting the height of an office chair requires choosing the appropriate method based on the type of chair, as there are differences in operation between ordinary office chairs and inflatable office chairs. Details are as follows:

I. Raising an Ordinary Office Chair
- Locate the Adjustment Mechanism: Flip or tilt the chair and look for two crossed adjustment cords at the bottom of the seat (usually made of nylon, connecting the seat to the gas lift). If the chair has a special design, there may also be plastic clips or metal pull rings under the seat.
- Stabilize the Chair Structure: Hold the armrests or the center of the backrest with both hands (some chairs may require pressing down on the top crossbar) to keep the chair balanced and prevent it from tilting or rolling when lifted.
- Apply Pulling Force: Pull up on the bottom adjustment cords with concentrated force. Usually, a slight pull is enough to trigger the locking mechanism of the gas lift, causing the chair to rise slowly. If the chair is equipped with clips, press the clips while lifting the seat.
- Confirm Stability: After the chair reaches the desired height, check that the center of gravity is centered and ensure that all four legs are firmly on the ground to prevent slipping due to an off-center weight distribution.
II. Lowering an Ordinary Office Chair
- Press Down on the Seat Edge: Use one hand to press down firmly on the front or side of the seat to ensure the chair is in stable contact with the ground and prevent wobbling during adjustment.
- Trigger the Adjustment Lever: While maintaining the downward pressure, use the other hand to lift the adjustment lever under the seat (usually made of metal or plastic, located near the gas lift). The chair will then slowly descend as the gas lift releases pressure.
- Lock the Height: After adjusting to the appropriate height, release the adjustment lever, and the gas lift will automatically lock, fixing the chair's height.
III. Adjusting an Inflatable Office Chair
- Locate the Gas Lift Knob: Lift the dust cover at the center of the bottom of the chair and find the knob with a texture or arrow mark (usually made of plastic, about 3-5 centimeters in diameter).
- Rotate to Adjust Height: Hold the knob with your hand. Rotating it clockwise will lower the chair's height, while rotating it counterclockwise will raise it. Maintain even force when rotating to avoid damaging the gas lift due to excessive force.
- Confirm Backrest Direction: Some inflatable office chairs have knobs that also adjust the backrest. When rotating, pay attention to whether the backrest moves synchronously. If you need to adjust the backrest separately, refer to the product manual for instructions.
Precautions: Before adjusting, ensure that the chair is not damaged to avoid accidents caused by sudden release during adjustment. If the chair's height cannot be adjusted, it may be due to a faulty gas lift, and you should contact a professional for repair.
