How to Adjust the Height of an Office Chair

Admin October 14, 2026

The methods for adjusting the height of an office chair are mainly divided into the following steps, and you can choose the appropriate operation according to the specific model:

1. Locate the Hand Control Device
First, you need to find the height adjustment control component on the chair. If you are already seated, try pulling up the control lever under the seat or on the side (common in pneumatic lift chairs). Some models may require turning a knob instead of pulling a lever. If you cannot determine the correct control lever, refer to the user manual that comes with the chair or try each lever one by one (usually, the seat will have a noticeable lifting or lowering response when the height adjustment lever is operated).

2. Perform the Height Adjustment Operation

  • Pneumatic Lift Chairs: After pulling up the control lever, your body weight will release the pneumatic device. At this point, you can adjust the seat height by moving your body up and down. To raise the seat, repeatedly push the lever lightly (pumping action); to lower it, keep the lever pulled up and press your body down. After adjustment, push the lever back into place to lock the height.
  • Mechanical Lift Chairs: Some older or professional office chairs use a screw-lift structure. You need to rotate the seat or the knob at the bottom to adjust the height. Apply even force during operation to avoid jamming.

3. Verify Comfort and Correctness
During the adjustment process, operate gently and control each movement within a few centimeters to avoid losing control due to rapid lifting or lowering. After adjusting to the ideal height, confirm whether your sitting posture meets ergonomic standards:

  • When seated, your thighs should be parallel to the ground, and your knees should be bent at about 90 degrees.
  • Your feet should be flat on the ground, with the soles fully in contact with the ground.
  • When your arms hang naturally, your elbows should be at the same height as the desktop.
If you still feel uncomfortable after adjustment, try readjusting from a standing position: Adjust the chair height so that the front of the seat is just below your knees. When you sit down, your feet should be able to rest naturally flat on the ground.

4. Supplementary Operations for Special Models
Some dynamic ergonomic chairs (such as those with headrests) may require additional adjustments:

  • Headrest Height: Simply lift the headrest to the desired position. Some models support slight forward and backward angle adjustments.
  • Lumbar Support Adjustment: If the chair is equipped with adjustable lumbar support, use the side knob or the control lever on the back to adjust the support intensity and position.

Precautions:

  • Before adjustment, ensure that the chair is placed on a flat surface to avoid height perception errors caused by an uneven floor.
  • Pneumatic lift chairs should have their pneumatic rod seals checked regularly. If there is air leakage or lifting/lowering jamming, contact a professional for repair.
  • Mechanical lift chairs should avoid excessive rotation to prevent thread wear, which can affect the service life.
