How to Adjust Office Chair Height
Admin October 12, 2026
The method for adjusting the height of an office chair depends on the type of chair. Here are the specific steps:

I. Ordinary Manual Adjustment Office Chairs
- Using the Adjustment Lever There is usually a height adjustment lever (mostly a black or silver metal lever) located beneath or on the side of the seat. The operation method varies depending on the design:
- Lever-type: Lift or press the lever while gently pressing or lifting the seat with your body to assist in the adjustment. Some models require repeated pumping of the lever (pushing it up and down) to achieve gradual height adjustment, suitable for pneumatic support structures.
- Knob-type: If you cannot find the lever, try turning the knob beneath the seat. Rotate it clockwise or counterclockwise to adjust the height.
- Locking Function: After adjustment, reset the lever (such as pushing it back into place or releasing the button) to fix the height and prevent sliding. If you are unsure about the function of the control lever, it is recommended to consult the user manual or test each lever one by one (test the short lever first, as the long lever usually controls the backrest tilt).
- Standing Position Assisted Adjustment If it is difficult to adjust while sitting, stand in front of the chair and adjust the seat height so that the front of the seat is just below your knees. When you sit down, your feet should be able to rest flat on the ground, and your thighs should be parallel to the ground, ensuring ergonomic standards are met.
II. Electric Office Chairs
- Button Adjustment There is usually an electric control panel on the side of the seat with up and down arrow buttons. Press the corresponding button to automatically adjust the height. Some models support memory functions, allowing you to preset commonly used heights.
- Troubleshooting If the buttons do not work, first check if the power connection is secure (such as a loose plug or low battery). If the power is normal but the chair still cannot be adjusted, contact after-sales service for repair. Avoid disassembling it yourself to prevent circuit damage.
III. Special Case Handling
- Damaged Adjustment Lever If the pneumatic lever fails, purchase a compatible model (check parameters such as load-bearing capacity, pipe diameter, and stroke). Follow these steps to replace it:
- Fully release the seat pressure (such as inverting the chair or using a tool to release the pressure);
- Remove the old pneumatic lever and align the new one with the original hole for installation;
- Wear protective gloves during operation to prevent injury from the sudden ejection of the pneumatic lever.
- Chairs Without Adjustment Functions
- Padding Method: Place wooden boards, rubber pads, etc. (thickness recommended โค 5cm) under the chair legs. Ensure the padding is flat and stable to avoid the risk of tipping over.
- Modification Device: Contact a furniture repair shop to install a pneumatic lever or mechanical height adjustment structure, suitable for old fixed-height chairs.
Precautions: Before adjustment, confirm the maximum load-bearing capacity of the chair to avoid structural damage caused by overloading. When repairing an electric chair, be sure to cut off the power supply to ensure safety.
