Homemade Office Chair Seat

Admin October 09, 2026

There are several feasible ways to make an office chair seat at home, which can be chosen according to your needs and material conditions:

1. Homemade Swivel Office Chair
If you have woodworking or metalworking skills, you can make a swivel office chair by referring to the principles of mechanical structure design. The core components include a base, a swivel shaft, a pneumatic rod (optional), and a seat surface. The base should be made of a five-claw star-shaped metal or wooden structure to ensure stability. The swivel shaft can achieve flexible rotation through bearings. If height adjustment is required, a standard pneumatic rod can be purchased and installed between the base and the seat. The seat surface can be processed from a wooden or plastic board into an ergonomic arc shape and covered with sponge and leather or fabric on the surface. When making it, ensure that all components are firmly connected, especially that the load-bearing capacity of the swivel shaft and the pneumatic rod meets the weight standard of the user.

2. DIY Car Seat into Computer Office Chair
Repurposing a scrapped car seat is an efficient and comfortable option. For example, the middle-row fabric seats of the Toyota Sienna come with headrests, armrests, and adjustment functions, and can be directly disassembled and installed on an office chair base. The modification steps are as follows: Remove the slide rails of the original car seat (if it needs to be fixed) and keep the adjustment mechanism; purchase a metal or wooden office chair base (with a five-star foot and universal wheels); fix the seat to the base with bolts to ensure a stable center of gravity. The advantage of this method is that the seat already has an ergonomic design and does not require additional padding. However, pay attention to the matching of the car seat size with the height of the office desk to avoid having your arms hanging in the air when using it.

3. Old Clothes into Cushion, DIY Handmade Comfortable Office Seat
For users with a limited budget or those pursuing environmental protection, old clothes can be used to make cushions to improve the comfort of the seat. The steps are as follows: Collect thick clothes (such as sweaters and jeans) and cut them into uniformly sized cloth pieces; stack the cloth pieces layer by layer to a thickness of 5-10 cm and sew them firmly with a needle and thread; wrap the outer layer with waterproof and stain-resistant fabric (such as old curtains) and sew it; fix the cushion to the surface of the original office chair with Velcro or straps. This method has extremely low cost, but the cushion cover needs to be cleaned regularly, and the filling may collapse due to long-term use and needs to be supplemented in a timely manner.

4. Making a Stool with Beverage Bottles as an Office Chair Seat
This method is suitable for making temporary or lightweight seats. The materials include PET bottles, tape, plywood, polyester fiber cotton, and filling materials. The specific steps are as follows: Arrange 7 PET bottles in a 1+6 structure and fix them into a cylindrical shape with tape; stack the PET bottles layer by layer to the desired height (usually 3-4 layers); cut the plywood into round pieces that are 2.54 cm larger in diameter than the bottle ring and fix them to the top and bottom of the bottle ring respectively; wrap the bottle body with polyester fiber cotton and fix it with a stapler; fill the top with polyester lining or sponge and sew it firmly with a thread; finally, make a chair cover (measure the circumference and height of the stool and then cut and sew the fabric). Note: This seat has a limited load-bearing capacity (it is recommended not to exceed 50 kg). Long-term use may cause the bottle body to deform, and the structural stability needs to be checked regularly.
