Homemade Office Chair Cushion
Admin October 12, 2026
There are multiple ways to make a homemade office chair cushion. Here are the specific methods and steps:

Method 1: Corduroy Fabric with Cotton Padding and Fixation
- Material Preparation: Choose corduroy fabric (durable and comfortable to the touch), padding cotton (such as polyester fiber cotton), ropes, elastic bands, scissors, and a needle and thread or a sewing machine.
- Fabric Cutting: Cut the fabric according to the size of the chair seat, usually 2-3 centimeters larger than the seat to allow for sewing and padding space.
- Sewing and Padding: Fold the fabric with the wrong side out, sew three sides to form a pocket shape, turn it back to the right side, and fill it with cotton to the appropriate thickness. Sew the remaining opening.
- Fixation Design: Sew rope loops at the four corners or edges of the cushion and fix it to the bottom of the chair with ropes; or sew elastic bands and place them under the chair seat to prevent sliding.
Key Points: Corduroy fabric should be pre-shrunk to avoid deformation after washing; the padding cotton should be evenly distributed to prevent local sagging.
Method 2: Patchwork Style
- Material Preparation: Two colors of old fabric (such as cotton cloth), pins, a needle and thread, padding cotton, and long fabric strips (for handles or decoration).
- Cutting and Marking: Fold the large and small fabric pieces in half respectively, and mark the cutting notches along the fold lines (for patchwork positioning); the large fabric piece should be 10-15 centimeters larger than the small one to form an edge.
- Patchwork Sewing: Place the small fabric piece in the center of the large one, fix the edges with pins, and then sew them together; fold the remaining edges of the large fabric piece inward and sew them to form the border of the cushion.
- Padding and Finishing: Fill the center of the patchwork fabric with cotton and sew the bottom gap; if handles are needed, sew the long fabric strips on both sides of the cushion.
Key Points: Keep the fabric pieces flat during patchwork to avoid wrinkles; use double stitching when sewing the edges to extend the service life.
Method 3: Nine-Square Grid Structure
- Material Preparation: Two 37ร37 cm square pieces of fabric (such as canvas), padding cotton, a needle and thread, a ruler, and chalk.
- Drawing the Nine-Square Grid: Divide each side of the fabric into three equal parts and draw lines with chalk to form a nine-square grid pattern; sew along the lines to create 8 independent small squares and 1 central square.
- Padding and Sewing: Fill each small square with cotton, ensuring the filling amount is consistent to keep the cushion flat; sew all the openings, then place the two pieces of fabric with the right sides facing each other and sew around the edges, leaving a return opening for turning.
- Final Processing: Turn the cushion back to the right side through the return opening, sew the return opening, and press the edges to fix them.
Key Points: The nine-square grid structure can disperse pressure and is suitable for long-term sitting; use a tool (such as chopsticks) to push the cotton into the corners during filling to avoid gaps.
Method 4: DIY Transformation of Old Clothes
- Material Selection: Use thick fabrics such as old sweaters and jeans to reduce costs and be environmentally friendly.
- Cutting and Processing: Cut the old clothes according to the size of the chair and remove unnecessary parts (such as sweater cuffs and jeans pockets); if the fabric is thin, stack 2-3 layers to enhance durability.
- Sewing and Padding: Sew the cut fabric into a pocket shape and fill it with cotton or fabric scraps; if waterproofing is needed, add a plastic sheet or waterproof coating fabric on the inner layer.
- Personalized Design: Sew patterns or add tassels with the remaining fabric to enhance aesthetics.
Key Points: Old clothes should be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected; use a zigzag stitch when sewing to prevent the fabric from unraveling.
