Homemade Long Office Chair

Admin October 19, 2026

You can refer to the following steps to make a homemade long office chair, but note that this method is more inclined towards making an ordinary long chair. If it is to be used for office purposes, the structure needs to be adjusted in combination with ergonomics:

I. Basic Frame Construction

The stability of the long chair depends on its frame structure. It is recommended to prioritize choosing wooden boards with a moderate thickness and strong load-bearing capacity. For example, four wooden boards of the same size (such as 80cm in length, 10cm in width, and 3cm in thickness) can be selected and nailed or screwed with wood screws into two square-shaped frames. These two frames will serve as the front and rear support structures of the chair respectively. The spacing between them is recommended to be adjusted according to the target chair length (for example, when the total length is 120cm, the spacing between the front and rear frames is about 100cm). If stronger load-bearing capacity is required, triangular wooden blocks can be added at the four corners of the frame for reinforcement, or mortise-and-tenon joints can be used instead of nails for connection.

II. Backrest and Seat Assembly

  1. Backrest Design: Fix a long wooden board diagonally above one of the frames as the backrest support. For example, select a wooden board that is 60cm long and 15cm wide, and fix it to the rear side of the frame with wood screws at an angle of 100ยฐ-110ยฐ to the horizontal plane (which conforms to the backrest inclination angle for a human sitting posture). If greater stability is required, horizontal wooden strips can be added between the backrest and the frame as supports.
  2. Seat Design: Lay a seat panel above the other frame. Multiple narrow wooden boards (such as 50cm in length and 8cm in width) can be selected for horizontal assembly, or a single whole wooden board (such as 100cm in length and 30cm in width) can be used directly. When assembling, ensure that the gaps between the wooden boards are less than 0.5cm to avoid discomfort when sitting. If greater comfort is required, a 3cm-5cm thick sponge pad can be laid on the seat panel and wrapped and fixed with fabric.

III. Reinforcement and Decoration

  1. Structural Reinforcement: Check whether all connection points are stable, especially the junctions between the backrest and the frame and between the seat and the frame. If any looseness is found, nails or wood screws can be added, or metal corner braces (such as L-shaped corner braces) can be installed at key positions.
  2. Detail Handling: If aesthetics are pursued, carving, sanding, or painting can be carried out with reference to carpentry tutorials. For example, sand the surface of the wooden boards with sandpaper to make them smooth and avoid scratches from burrs; select environmentally friendly wood paint and apply it evenly in 2-3 coats to enhance moisture resistance and durability. If functions of an office chair (such as armrests and adjustability) are required, additional structural designs are needed: armrests can be fixed on both sides of the frame with short wooden boards, and the height is recommended to be level with the seat; adjustability requires the introduction of metal slide rails or hydraulic rods, but professional tools and skills are required for support.

Precautions: When making a long chair at home, ensure that the structure is stable to avoid collapse due to insufficient load-bearing capacity. If it is to be used in an office setting, it is recommended to adjust parameters such as the backrest angle and seat height in combination with ergonomic principles to improve long-term comfort during use.
