Homemade Lazy Office Chair

Admin October 11, 2026

You can refer to the following two low-cost plans for making a homemade lazy office chair:

Plan 1: Refitting a second-hand seat from the middle row of a Buick GL8 The core of this plan is to utilize the comfort and adjustability of a car seat and transform it into an office chair. In terms of material selection, a cloth-covered second-hand seat costs about 300 yuan, while a leather-covered one costs about 500 yuan. You can choose according to your budget and needs. For the refitting steps, refer to online practical tutorials. Generally, they include using a wrench to disassemble the original seat, designing and refitting the base (such as using wooden boards or metal brackets), installing universal wheels or fixed brackets, and finally fixing the seat onto the base. The key point is to ensure the stability of the base to prevent the seat from tipping over. If height adjustment is required, a hydraulic lifting device can be installed. The advantage is that the seat itself has an ergonomic design, offering high comfort, and the refitting difficulty is relatively low. Ordinary users can complete it with the help of graphic guides.

Plan 2: Making a folding chair This plan is suitable for those who like handicrafts or need portability. It is divided into two types: wooden and metal.

  • Wooden folding chair: For the materials, you need to prepare wooden boards, masking paper, sandpaper, hinges, etc. The steps include: sticking masking paper on the wooden board and drawing patterns, cutting and then sanding the edges; assembling the wooden boards, using a hole puncher to make small circular holes and installing hinges; flipping the seat and continuing to install hinges for fixation; opening the chair to find the support points, marking the traces and making corner holes to enhance stability. Note that it is necessary to ensure the hinges are firmly installed to prevent looseness during folding.
  • Metal folding chair: For the materials, you need to prepare steel pipes, aluminum feet, wood, screws, spray paint, etc. The steps include: cutting the steel pipes according to the marks, marking and making holes at the top with round fittings; placing the chair legs with aluminum feet and marking the holes for cutting, cutting small pieces of wood and inserting them to increase friction; sanding the excess edges, making a seat cushion and fixing the chair legs with screws; marking and making grooves on the inner chair legs for folding, and welding screws on the outer chair legs; welding crossbeams between the chair legs to increase stability; finally, cutting the bottom to make it even and spraying paint. The key point is that the welding process must be firm to prevent the chair legs from loosening. Spray paint can prevent metal rust and extend the service life.

Both plans have their pros and cons: the car seat refitting offers high comfort but poor portability; the folding chair is flexible to make but requires certain handicraft skills. You can choose the appropriate plan according to your actual needs.
