Hemorrhoids and Office Chairs

Admin October 08, 2026

The choice and use of office chairs are closely related to hemorrhoids. Prolonged sitting and inappropriate chair types can significantly increase the risk of developing or exacerbating hemorrhoids.

1. Prolonged sitting is a major cause of hemorrhoids
Maintaining a sitting position for extended periods (especially continuously sitting for more than 4 hours) directly compresses the perianal veins, obstructing blood flow and causing blood to accumulate in the hemorrhoidal cushions, leading to venous congestion. This sustained pressure weakens the elasticity of the perianal blood vessel walls, increasing the likelihood of hemorrhoids. Office workers, due to the nature of their jobs requiring long hours at desks, are more prone to hemorrhoids if they lack physical activity.

2. The firmness of office chairs affects perianal pressure distribution

  • Hard chairs: The body's weight is concentrated on a small contact area of the buttocks, causing a sharp increase in local perianal pressure, obstructing venous blood flow, and exacerbating hemorrhoidal congestion and edema.
  • Overly soft chairs (such as deep sofas): Excessive sinking of the buttocks causes the pelvis to tilt backward, placing excessive pressure on the coccyx and sacrum. Additionally, poor ventilation leads to the accumulation of heat and moisture, disrupting the dry perianal environment and increasing the risk of bacterial growth, which may induce or worsen hemorrhoids over time.
An ideal chair should have moderate support (such as an ergonomic chair) and good ventilation (such as mesh material), which can disperse pressure and maintain local dryness and cleanliness.

3. Poor usage habits exacerbate the risk of hemorrhoids
In addition to chair type, behaviors such as prolonged sitting and playing with phones on the toilet further extend the time the perianal area is under pressure, interfering with blood circulation. For example, playing with a phone on the toilet may prolong defecation time to more than 10 minutes, causing sustained dilation of the perianal veins and increasing the risk of hemorrhoids.

4. Prevention recommendations

  • Regular movement: Get up and move around for 5-10 minutes every hour of sitting to promote blood circulation.
  • Choose the right chair: Prioritize office chairs with good support and ventilation, avoiding chairs that are too hard or too soft.
  • Correct poor habits: Reduce time spent on the toilet and avoid crossing legs or sitting with legs crossed for extended periods.
  • Maintain perianal cleanliness: Clean the perianal area with warm water after defecation and avoid vigorous wiping.

By choosing the right office chair and adjusting usage habits, the risk of developing hemorrhoids can be effectively reduced, and perianal health can be improved.
