Hazards of Office Chair Collapse

Admin October 09, 2026

The hazards of office chair collapse are mainly reflected in multiple aspects such as spinal health, local injuries, muscle and posture issues, hygiene and safety, and prostate health, as detailed below:

Spinal Health Damage

When the collapse exceeds two centimeters, the body's weight concentrates on the ischial tuberosity area, forcing the gluteal and lumbar muscles to exert extra effort to maintain balance, leading to muscle strain and tension, and triggering lower back pain. Long-term use shifts the body's center of gravity forward, increasing lumbar curvature, disrupting the natural spinal curve, accelerating intervertebral disc degeneration, and even increasing the risk of lumbar disc herniation. If the seat cushion collapses more than three centimeters, it directly undermines ergonomic support, causing excessive lumbar lordosis. The upper body's weight concentrates on the coccyx and pelvis, and continuous sitting for more than half an hour may trigger lower back muscle soreness and weakness, even forming a poor posture of rounding the shoulders forward. Over the long term, this may lead to irreversible changes in the spinal physiological curve. If the chair's middle sags, leaving the lower back unsupported, the lumbar spine is forced to collapse, similarly disrupting the natural spinal curve and potentially causing lumbar disc herniation in severe cases.

Local Injuries

Direct impact of the coccyx on a hard surface (especially plastic stools) can cause fractures; compression of the back of the thigh by the chair's edge can obstruct blood circulation, leading to numbness and swelling in the legs and feet. A collapsed seat surface can also compress blood vessels and nerves in the buttocks, increasing the frequency of lower limb numbness. People who sit for long periods at desks may experience intermittent stabbing pains in their legs and feet, requiring medical attention in severe cases.

Muscle and Posture Issues

Sitting in a sunken chair easily leads to slouching, requiring continuous effort from the back muscles to maintain balance, causing tension in the erector spinae muscles, and potentially developing into scoliosis over the long term.

Hygiene and Safety Hazards

The sunken areas formed by collapse easily accumulate sweat and skin flakes, fostering the growth of pathogens such as Escherichia coli and triggering skin infections. If the collapse is due to damage to the gas spring (pneumatic rod), gas leakage may prevent the seat from locking at a set height, causing slow sinking or sudden collapse. Poor-quality products may even pose a risk of explosion. When chair structure damage leads to collapse, users may lose balance and fall, and in public places, chair collapse can also affect surrounding individuals, causing secondary injuries.

Prostate Health Impact (for men)

Prolonged sitting on a sunken cushion continuously compresses the perineal area, potentially posing a risk to prostate health.
