Hair Entanglement on Office Chairs

Hair entanglement on office chairs should be cleaned promptly; otherwise, it can cause the casters to jam, increase the burden on the back, and even lead to lumbar muscle strain and other issues. Cleaning methods can be divided into four categories: simple tool cleaning, disassembly cleaning, special method cleaning, and direct replacement of new casters, as detailed below:

Simple Tool Cleaning

• Paperclip/Toothpick/Tweezers Hooking: Turn the chair upside down, bend a paperclip into a small hook or a '7' shape, and insert it along the caster axle gap to hook out the surface-entangled hair. Alternatively, use a toothpick, hairpin, or pointed tweezers to hook clumps of hair, wrap the tool clockwise, and pull it outward. For rubber casters, use a handheld vacuum cleaner to suck while picking.
• Floor Adhesion Method: When the floor is slightly wet after mopping, push the chair to roll, and the loose hair and debris on the casters will be stuck to the floor.

Disassembly Cleaning

• Caster Removal: Turn the chair upside down, hold the caster bracket with your hand, and gently pull it out (no tools needed for snap-on designs); if it is stuck, use a flat-head screwdriver with a soft cloth to pry the edge of the snap, remove the casters one by one, and inspect them.
• Deep Cleaning: Use tweezers to pick out long hair strands and fibers from the caster gaps (operate in the direction of rotation); use an old toothbrush dipped in neutral detergent to gently brush the surface and bearing gaps to remove dust and oil; rinse with water, wipe dry, and air-dry for 10 minutes (avoid water entering the bearings).
• Lever Assistance Method: Insert one lever into the caster gap to pry it open, insert another lever into the other side of the central axle to掰开 (split open), use small scissors to cut the hair ring, use tweezers to pull out the remaining hair, and then press it back.

Special Method Cleaning

• Hot Water Soaking Method: For stubborn entanglement, soak the casters in hot water at around 70℃ for 15 minutes to soften them, and then gently rub them off with your nails (nylon materials should not be soaked for a long time).
• Edible Oil Lubrication Method: Drip in peanut oil or olive oil and let it sit for half an hour to dissolve oily dirt, making it easier to pull out the entanglement as a whole.

Direct Replacement of New Casters

If the hair entanglement is severe and difficult to clean, you can purchase the same type of universal casters (about 10 yuan for 5 on e-commerce platforms). For snap-ring casters, simply pull out the old ones and replace them with new ones; the same applies to threaded casters.

Cleaning Precautions:

• Wear gloves during operation to prevent lubricant contamination, and avoid applying excessive force when prying the snaps to prevent damage to the casters.
• After cleaning, check if the casters rotate smoothly to ensure safe use.
• It is recommended to clean for 5 minutes every month or lay a small floor mat at the workstation to reduce hair entanglement.
