Government Office Chair Procurement

Admin October 09, 2026

Government procurement of office chairs should adhere to policy regulations, emphasize quality and cost-effectiveness, and be carried out through compliant methods. Details are as follows:

Policy Regulations: The National Government Offices Administration issued the 'Guidelines on Specifications and Performance of General Office Furniture for Central Administrative Institutions', which clearly defines the specifications and performance indicators for eight types of general office furniture, including office chairs. It covers aspects such as appearance and main dimensions, surface physical and chemical properties, mechanical properties, and environmental requirements, aiming to promote large-scale production and procurement and ensure long-term effective use. It also requires all departments to practice thrift, ensuring that the specifications of office chairs are in harmony with the area of office space, and that the quantity and price do not exceed relevant standards.

Procurement Methods and Cases: Different regions employ various methods for government procurement of office chairs. For example, the People's Government of Xincheng Town, Binhai New Area, Tianjin, signed a procurement contract on September 24, 2026. The purchaser (Party A) was the Organ of the People's Government of Xincheng Town, Binhai New Area, Tianjin, and the supplier (Party B) was Tianjin Yihe Office Furniture Co., Ltd. The main items included a quantity of 4, a unit price of 470 yuan, and a total contract amount of 1,880 yuan, with the procurement method being agreement supply. The Shuitu Sub-district Office of the People's Government of Beibei District, Chongqing, adopted a secondary bidding (single-round) method for its office chair procurement project. In Bidding Package 1, the price limit for the office chair procurement package was 800 yuan, with a unit price limit of 550 yuan and a quantity of 5, totaling a limit of 2,750 yuan. Detailed requirements were specified for the specifications, including medium back, soft material, front-mounted mechanism, high-quality chassis, and features such as height adjustment and multi-stage tilt locking.

Quality Issues: The quality of office chairs cannot be overlooked. On March 2, 2023, the United States and Canada initiated a recall of office chairs produced in China due to the risk of the backrest breaking, posing a falling hazard. Twelve reports had been received, including ten injuries. On September 30, 2024, the State Administration for Market Regulation conducted a national supervision and inspection of office chairs and found that 15 batches of products were unqualified, with stability issues being prominent. On January 16, 2025, the United States initiated a recall of WorkPro Momentum office chairs produced in China due to the risk of bolt failure, posing a falling hazard. Seven reports had been received, including two minor injuries. This serves as a reminder for governments to strictly control quality when procuring office chairs to ensure that the products meet safety standards.
