Admin October 08, 2026

The core content related to office chairs in the GB/T standards is as follows:

I. GB/T 38733-2020 'Office Furniture - Office Chairs - Dimensional Measurement Methods'
This standard serves as a foundational specification for measuring the dimensions of office chairs. It was released on April 28, 2020, and implemented on November 1 of the same year. Its primary role is to provide a unified and scientific measurement method for the design, quality evaluation, and procurement acceptance of office chairs, promoting the industry's development towards refinement and humanization. The standard was jointly drafted by 12 institutions, including Zhejiang Sunon Furniture Manufacturing Co., Ltd. and Shanghai Institute of Quality Inspection and Technical Research, with 17 main drafters, including Lu Jufen and Liu Chenguang. By standardizing dimensional measurement terminology and procedures, this standard resolves quality disputes caused by inconsistent measurement methods, such as measurement standards for key parameters like backrest height and seat depth, providing clear guidance for consumers' purchasing decisions and manufacturers' production.

II. GB/T 38733-2026 (Draft for Comments)
On March 16, 2026, the National Furniture Standardization Technical Committee released a draft revision of this standard, consisting of 68 pages. This revision aims to adapt to the trends of new technologies and materials applications in the office chair industry, potentially involving improvements in measurement tool accuracy and the expansion of dimensional parameters for intelligent office chairs. The release of the draft for comments marks the standard's entry into a dynamic update phase, ensuring its continued alignment with market demands and technological advancements through extensive industry feedback collection.

III. GB/T 14531-2017 'Office Furniture - Reading Tables, Chairs, and Stools'
This standard primarily targets reading chairs used in libraries, archives, and similar settings, specifying quality requirements, test methods, and packaging and storage requirements. For example, it sets specific indicators for chair load-bearing capacity, stability, and material environmental friendliness, and verifies performance through test methods that simulate long-term usage scenarios. In March 2025, the national standard plan initiated revision work, with an expected completion of the draft for comments submission by October 2025 and entry into the review phase by May 2026. Revision directions may include adding adaptability requirements for adjustable reading chairs and strengthening regulations on the use of environmentally friendly materials to meet the upgrading needs of public reading spaces.
