Formaldehyde in Office Chairs
Admin October 08, 2026
Formaldehyde in office chairs is primarily hidden in artificial wood panels, adhesives, soft upholstery fabrics, and surface coatings, with a release period lasting 3-15 years. When purchasing, it is essential to focus on environmental protection grades, certifications, and test reports.

Main Sources of Formaldehyde
- Artificial Wood Panels: If particleboard, medium-density fiberboard (MDF), or plywood are used for the backrest or seat base of an office chair, the urea-formaldehyde resin adhesive added during production will continuously decompose and release formaldehyde, making it a major source of pollution.
- Soft Upholstery and Fabrics: Sponges, fabrics, and the adhesives used to secure them may contain formaldehyde. Cheap products are more likely to use low-quality adhesives to reduce costs, leading to excessive formaldehyde emissions.
- Surface Coatings: The anti-rust coatings on metal frames and the paints on plastic parts may contain formaldehyde, which accelerates release, especially under high-temperature conditions.
- Edge Sealing Process: If the cut edges of wood panels are not properly sealed, formaldehyde can be released in large quantities from the exposed sections. Chairs with rough craftsmanship pose a higher risk.
Current Situation of Formaldehyde Exceedance and Detection Methods
According to inspections by the State Administration for Market Regulation, the batch failure rate of office chairs once reached 23.3%, with formaldehyde exceedance being a typical issue. Detection methods include:
- Sensory Judgment: If a pungent odor is detected or if symptoms such as dry eyes or sore throat occur after prolonged sitting, be alert to formaldehyde exceedance. However, odor only serves as a warning and cannot quantify formaldehyde levels.
- Formaldehyde Detection Kits: These are simple to operate and low-cost, but the results are greatly affected by temperature and humidity, with limited accuracy. They are only suitable for semi-quantitative reference.
- Portable Detectors: Ensure that the detector has a CMA metrological certification mark; otherwise, the data may have significant deviations.
- Professional Agency Testing: Commission a third-party agency with CMA qualification for sampling and testing. The results are the most authoritative and are suitable for use in disputes or cases of severe discomfort, although the cost is higher.
Four Key Criteria for Selecting Low-Formaldehyde Office Chairs
- Check the Environmental Protection Grade of Wood Panels: Prioritize products labeled with E0 grade (formaldehyde emission โค 0.05 mg/mยณ) or ENF grade (currently the strictest standard).
- Look for Environmental Certifications: Legitimate products should have the China Environmental Label (Ten-Ring Certification) or CQC certification. The manufacturer should preferably have passed ISO9001 quality management system and ISO14001 environmental management system certifications.
- Verify Test Reports: Request recent third-party test reports from the merchant and verify the authenticity of the report number and the name of the testing agency to avoid merchants fabricating or tampering with data.
- Prioritize Products with Authoritative Certifications: For domestic products, pay attention to vehicle coin test reports; for exported products, they should pass the Wind Horse Certification or EU hospital test reports to ensure quality meets international standards.
