Formaldehyde-Exceeding Office Chairs
Formaldehyde-exceeding office chairs pose health risks, and consumers need to be vigilant about the authenticity of test reports and pay attention to product inspection information.

Formaldehyde is a colorless gas with a strong pungent odor. Long-term exposure to office chairs with excessive formaldehyde levels may cause discomfort such as dizziness, fatigue, and nausea. In severe cases, it may even damage the respiratory system, nervous system, and immune system, increasing the risk of cancer.
Taking a specific case as an example, Ms. He from Shenzhen purchased three swivel chairs from the online store of "Jinbei Office Furniture Factory". After using them, she found that the chairs emitted a pungent odor and caused dizziness after sitting for a long time. The test report provided by the merchant showed that the formaldehyde emission was "qualified". However, after an investigation by the Shenzhen Consumer Council, it was found that the merchant had tampered with the test report. The official website of the National Furniture Product Quality Inspection and Testing Center (Jiangxi) showed that the report with the same number indicated that the formaldehyde emission was "unqualified". Eventually, the court ruled that the merchant should refund the purchase price and pay triple compensation. This indicates that some merchants, in pursuit of profit, are willing to forge test reports and deceive consumers.
The results of the national supervision and random inspection of office chairs released by the State Administration for Market Regulation are also not optimistic. A total of 101 batches of office chair products produced by 101 enterprises were inspected, and 15 batches were found to be unqualified, with a non-compliance rate of 14.9%. Among them, 4 batches had excessive formaldehyde emissions. This shows that formaldehyde-exceeding office chairs are not isolated cases in the market, and consumers need to be cautious when making purchases.
In addition, the formaldehyde-exceeding incident of desks and chairs at Huaihai Institute of Technology in Lianyungang, Jiangsu, is also worthy of attention. The integrated wardrobes and self-study desks replaced in multiple dormitory buildings of the school emitted a persistent odor. According to the test by the Lianyungang Quality Supervision Bureau, the formaldehyde emission of the dormitory desks and chairs was 1.8 milligrams per liter (the standard is 1.5 milligrams), and that of the teaching building desks and chairs reached 5.8 milligrams, exceeding the standard by 286%. The school claimed that the products were purchased through formal bidding, and the test reports provided by the manufacturer during the bidding process showed that they were qualified, but the actually delivered products had quality issues. This reflects that even products purchased through formal channels may have excessive formaldehyde levels.
When purchasing office chairs, consumers should choose formal channels and well-known brands, carefully check the product's test reports, and verify the authenticity of the reports through official channels.
