Formaldehyde Detection in Office Chairs

Admin October 09, 2026

Formaldehyde detection is crucial when purchasing office chairs, but there are two major issues: falsified test reports and excessive formaldehyde emissions, requiring careful attention.

Frequent Falsification of Test Reports

Some merchants falsify or forge test reports to conceal product issues. For example, Ms. He from Shenzhen purchased an office chair from the online store 'Jinbei Office Furniture Factory.' The test report provided by the merchant indicated that the formaldehyde emission was 'qualified.' However, after the Shenzhen Consumer Council checked the official website of the National Furniture Product Quality Inspection and Testing Center (Jiangxi) using the same report number, it was found to be marked as 'unqualified' on the website, revealing the merchant's illegal act of tampering with the report. Additionally, the test report published by the merchant selling the popular 'Liuliu Stool' from the store 'Holiday Childhood Yunqi Furniture Store' was also found to be forged, with the associated testing website being fake. Such actions severely mislead consumers, making them believe that the products meet safety standards, when in fact, they may be exposed to excessive formaldehyde levels for extended periods, posing health risks.

Prominent Issue of Excessive Formaldehyde Emissions

According to the national supervision and random inspection results of office chairs released by the State Administration for Market Regulation, some products have excessive formaldehyde emissions. Formaldehyde is a common indoor pollutant, and long-term exposure can cause respiratory diseases, allergic reactions, and even increase the risk of cancer. As office chairs are frequently used furniture, their formaldehyde emissions directly affect the health and safety of users. If the formaldehyde emissions of a product are unqualified, formaldehyde concentrations may gradually accumulate in a confined office environment, posing a potential threat to employee health.

Recommendations

When purchasing office chairs, consumers should buy through legitimate channels and request genuine, verifiable test reports from merchants. They can verify the authenticity of the report number through official websites or by contacting testing institutions to avoid being deceived by fake reports. Additionally, consumers should pay attention to the materials and craftsmanship of the products, prioritizing office chairs made from eco-friendly materials to reduce the risk of formaldehyde emissions.
