Formal Office Chair

Admin October 08, 2026

A formal office chair is a chair equipped for the convenience of work in daily work and social activities. In a narrow sense, it refers to the backrest chair used for desk work in a sitting position, and in a broad sense, it covers various types of chairs in the office, such as executive chairs and staff chairs.

I. Structural and Functional Design
Some formal office chairs focus on ergonomic design. Taking the boss chair as an example, as a type of computer chair, it is usually used in the office scenarios of enterprise managers, and some home studies are also equipped with it. Its structure consists of eight basic components, including wheels, a five-star base, a gas lift, and a chassis. The core of the design is to improve sitting and lying comfort. For example, the waist area needs to be equipped with an adjustable support structure to disperse the pressure from prolonged sitting; the head area needs to have an adjustable headrest to meet the neck support needs of users of different heights. In addition, the boss chair also serves as a symbol of professional image. Its appearance usually adopts a sober color scheme and line design to match the formal atmosphere of the office environment.

II. Material Selection and Characteristics
The materials of formal office chairs are mainly divided into two categories: leather and mesh.

  • Leather models: Mostly made of PU leather or genuine leather, they are commonly seen in executive chairs and mid-level chairs. PU leather has a lower cost and is easy to clean, while genuine leather appears more high-end but requires regular maintenance. The leather material has a soft touch and is suitable for office scenarios that need to reflect authority.
  • Mesh models: Due to their good breathability, they are commonly used in junior chairs, especially suitable for summer or long-term use scenarios. The mesh material promotes air circulation through a hollow design, reducing the feeling of stuffiness, but it should be noted that its durability may be lower than that of leather.
In addition, structural components such as frames, bases, and chair legs are often made of metal (such as aluminum alloy) or high-strength engineering plastics. Metal materials provide higher load-bearing capacity and stability, while engineering plastics achieve a balance between lightweight and impact resistance through optimized formulas.

III. Safety and Quality Certification
The safety of office chairs requires special attention. There have been many recall incidents in history due to quality issues:

  • On March 2, 2023, the United States and Canada recalled office chairs made in China because the backrests might break, posing a risk of falls.
  • On January 16, 2025, the United States recalled the WorkPro Momentum office chairs made in China because the bolts might fail, causing users to fall.
Therefore, when purchasing, it is necessary to confirm that the product has passed international safety certifications (such as the BIFMA standard) and check key indicators such as whether the gas lift has an anti-explosion design and whether the load-bearing capacity of the five-star base meets the standards.
