Fear of Office Chair Explosion

Admin October 11, 2026

It is understandable to fear the explosion of an office chair, but the risk can be effectively mitigated through proper selection and use. Explosions caused by component defects in pneumatic lifting swivel chairs do occur, but they are rare events. Their occurrence is closely related to the quality of the pneumatic rod, gas purity, tube wall thickness, and usage methods. The following explains the causes, preventive measures, and alternative solutions in three aspects:

Common Causes of Pneumatic Rod Explosions

  1. Material Defects: If the pneumatic rod has cracks, is too thin-walled, or is made of non-sturdy material, it is prone to developing cracks due to pressure changes or friction during long-term use, ultimately leading to structural failure.
  2. Insufficient Gas Purity: Nitrogen, as an inert gas, may be mixed with oxygen if its purity is insufficient. When the pneumatic rod is frequently lifted and lowered, generating high temperatures, oxygen can react with internal lubricants and other substances, potentially causing an explosion.
  3. Design or Usage Issues: Some low-priced products use compressed air instead of nitrogen to reduce costs or do not install explosion-proof devices. Frequent violent lifting and lowering by users, leading to a sudden increase in temperature, also increases the risk.

Preventive Measures

  1. Choose Genuine Products: Prioritize brands priced above 200 yuan that have clear manufacturer information, quality certificates, and registered trademarks, avoiding "three-no" products (no manufacturer name, no production address, and no production license).
  2. Verify Certification Level: Check if the pneumatic rod has an SGS certification stamp. If not, confirm whether it has passed TUV certification or BIFMA certification (certification levels 2-4 are preferable). These certifications indicate that the product has undergone rigorous safety testing.
  3. Inspect Explosion-Proof Steel Plate: Genuine products install an explosion-proof steel plate with a thickness of โ‰ฅ2 millimeters between the seat cushion and the pneumatic rod, which can block explosion fragments and provide dual protection.
  4. Test Smoothness: Before purchasing, check if the lifting and lowering of the pneumatic rod are smooth, avoiding stuttering, abnormal noises, or difficulty in lifting and lowering, which may be signals of internal structural damage.

Alternative Solutions

If you still have concerns about the safety of the pneumatic rod, you can choose a bow-shaped computer chair without a pneumatic rod. This type of chair is supported by a bow-shaped structure and has no pneumatic device. Although it lacks wheels, it can be adjusted by moving the chair or using a footrest, offering higher safety and suitable for users with strict stability requirements.

By selecting chairs properly, conducting regular inspections, and using them reasonably, the risk of office chair explosions can be significantly reduced. If you notice gas leakage, abnormal noises, or loose chair structures in the pneumatic rod, stop using it immediately and contact after-sales service.
