Export Office Chairs to Europe and America
Admin October 13, 2026
Office chairs exported to Europe and America need to meet the following certification and standard requirements:

The core standard for exporting to the European Union is the EN 1335 series, which is divided into three parts:
- EN 1335-1: Defines basic parameters and ergonomic requirements, including size codes such as seat height (400-530mm), backrest height (โฅ480mm), and seat depth (380-480mm). It also adds the requirement for adjustable lumbar support height to ensure that the chair fits users of different body types.
- EN 1335-2: Specifies safety tests, covering stability (such as forward and side tilt tests), chair wheel resistance (simulating friction on different floors), and durability of the seat and backrest (100,000 pressure impacts and 120,000 tilt cycles), ensuring no structural failure during long-term use.
- EN 1335-3: Evaluates dynamic comfort by measuring shape variables such as the seat inclination angle (recommended 5ยฐ-15ยฐ) and armrest height (200-270mm) to determine if they meet ergonomic expectations.
Other mandatory testing items in the European Union:
- EN 12520: Tests the load-bearing capacity of the base (โฅ110kg), explosion-proof performance of the gas spring (200,000 cycles without leakage), lifting durability (50,000 operations), armrest strength (vertical pressure โฅ1000N), and tipping stability (simulating a user suddenly standing up).
- Flame retardancy: Fabric upholstery needs to pass the EN 1021-1/2 standard (simulating cigarette and match combustion), and foam cushions need to comply with CAL TB 117-2013 (vertical burn rate โค100mm/min).
- Hazardous substance control: Plastic accessories need to pass RoHS testing (lead, cadmium, mercury, and other six heavy metals โค limit values), and leather upholstery needs to be tested for heavy metals (such as chromium โค1000mg/kg) and azo dyes (24 carcinogenic aromatic amines are prohibited).
Compliance requirements for exporting to the United States:
- California Proposition 65 certification: All plastic, foam, and paint components need to be tested for 65 hazardous substances such as lead, cadmium, and phthalates, with content levels below the thresholds specified in the California Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act (Prop 65).
- Mechanical safety tests: Include base impact (simulating heavy object drops), wheel wear resistance (5000 cycles without breakage), and gas spring safety (300,000 cycles without leakage). Platforms like Amazon require third-party laboratory reports (such as from SGS or Intertek).
- Additional requirements for leather office chairs: They should not contain toxic azo dyes (24 carcinogenic aromatic amines are prohibited) and need to pass the ISO 17072-1 standard test.
Compliance process and precautions:
- In the European Union, products need to be tested by a notified body (such as TรV or SGS) and affixed with the CE mark. At the same time, technical documentation (including design drawings, risk analysis reports, and test reports) needs to be established. In the United States, test reports need to be retained for future reference, and some platforms (such as Amazon) require the uploading of certification documents.
- European Union standards focus on physical performance and ergonomics, while the United States pays more attention to hazardous substances and mechanical safety. Manufacturers need to select the corresponding standards according to the target market to avoid customs clearance delays or returns due to missing certifications.
