Exploding Office Chair Fire Risk

Admin October 11, 2026

Exploding office chairs do pose a fire risk, which is related to defects in the gas springs, poor flame retardancy of materials, and high-temperature environments. This risk can be mitigated through proper selection and use.

Direct Causes of Exploding Office Chair Fires

  1. Gas Spring Defects: Low-quality gas springs are a major hazard. With thin tube walls and insufficient purity of inert gases (sometimes even replaced by compressed air), internal pressure can surge during high-temperature conditions or frequent lifting and lowering, potentially leading to explosions. The high temperatures or sparks generated during an explosion can ignite surrounding materials, such as cushion fillings or the chair shell. For example, inspections by the State Administration for Market Regulation have found that some gas springs fail to meet high- and low-temperature resistance standards, making them prone to physical rupture under extreme conditions.
  2. Poor Flame Retardancy of Materials: If the shell, cushion fillings, and other components of an office chair do not meet flame-retardant standards, they can easily catch fire from high temperatures or sparks after an explosion. An experiment on Hunan TV's News Truth Seekers showed that when heavy objects were used to impact the cushion of a low-quality seat, the chair exploded and caught fire, indicating a lack of fire-resistant properties in the materials.
  3. High-Temperature Environment Trigger: During frequent lifting and lowering, friction between internal gases or metal components in the gas spring can generate high temperatures. If the gas spring has defects (such as poor sealing), these high temperatures can ignite internal gases or external combustibles, further exacerbating the fire.

Prevention Recommendations

  1. Choose Certified Products: Prioritize office chairs priced above 200 yuan that have passed national safety certifications, and avoid purchasing unbranded products. Gas springs from reputable brands typically use thickened steel tubes and higher-purity inert gases, offering greater safety.
  2. Inspect Gas Spring Quality: When testing, observe whether the lifting and lowering are smooth without stuttering or unusual noises. If the gas spring offers excessive resistance during lifting and lowering, it may have internal structural defects and should be purchased with caution.
  3. Verify Explosion-Proof Design: Check whether a blast-resistant steel plate with a thickness of at least 2 millimeters is installed between the cushion and the gas spring. This plate can block explosion fragments, reducing the risk of fire and personal injury.
  4. Avoid High-Temperature Environments: Do not expose office chairs to direct sunlight or high-temperature equipment for extended periods to prevent performance degradation of the gas spring due to excessive heat.

By selecting and using office chairs properly, the fire risk associated with exploding office chairs can be effectively reduced, ensuring safety in use.
