Electric Office Chair Spontaneous Combustion

Admin October 10, 2026

Although there are currently no publicly reported cases directly involving the spontaneous combustion of electric office chairs, electric devices (including office chairs) carry a theoretical risk of fire caused by electrical faults, necessitating prevention through proper use and regular maintenance.

From the perspective of risk causes, the core cause of spontaneous combustion in electric devices is abnormal electrical systems. Taking electric massage chairs as an example, in February 2026, a spontaneous combustion incident occurred in Taizhou, Zhejiang, while the chair was not in use. The cause was an unplugged power cord leading to electrical circuit faults, ultimately triggering a fire and blackening the room. In similar cases, lithium battery failures or prolonged plugged-in states are also significant contributing factors^[2]. These cases reveal common risks associated with electric devices: if electrical circuits are aged, low-quality components are used, or there are design flaws, spontaneous combustion may occur due to short circuits, localized overheating, or battery thermal runaway. Electric office chairs equipped with electric adjustment functions (such as height adjustment and reclining) also have similar hidden dangers in their internal motors, power cords, control modules, and other electrical components, especially when left powered on for extended periods or in humid environments, where the risk may further increase.

Prevention should focus on electrical system safety. First, standardize electrical usage habits: Unplug the power when leaving to avoid prolonged standby power states for the device, reducing the risk of circuit aging; Second, conduct regular inspections and maintenance: Check the power cord and plug for damage every 3-6 months, and check for any unusual odors or overheating around the motor. Replace any aged or damaged components immediately; Third, choose compliant products: Prioritize purchasing electric office chairs that have passed 3C certification, as these products must undergo safety tests such as voltage resistance, insulation, and flame retardancy, significantly reducing the failure rate; Fourth, avoid overloading: Do not arbitrarily modify the device or connect non-original accessories to prevent overheating of the circuit due to excessive current.

It should be emphasized that spontaneous combustion of electric office chairs is a low-probability event, but the risk exists objectively. Through proactive preventive measures, the probability of occurrence can be minimized. If a burnt smell is detected, smoke is seen coming from the circuit, or the device is abnormally hot during use, immediately cut off the power and contact a professional for inspection and repair.
