Handmade Electric Office Chair

Admin October 09, 2026

There are relevant cases and methods for the handmade production of electric office chairs.

From publicly available information, it is not entirely unfeasible to handmake an electric office chair, and there are actual cases for reference. For example, the video titled 'Parent-Child Handmade DIY Toy: Electric Spinning Chair' released by iQiyi on June 8, 2025, although focused on toys, demonstrates the principles of manually constructing an electric rotating structure, including motor installation, battery power supply systems, and the assembly of simple control modules. These design ideas can be transferred to the modification of office chairs. For instance, a low-power motor can be used to drive the rotation of the chair seat, combined with switch control to achieve basic electric functions, suitable for simple scenarios with low functional requirements.

A more complex case is a fully handmade electric office chair, whose core functions are close to those of commercial products. The electric office chair in this case is described as a 'great helper for saving sleep happiness,' with key designs including a one-button controlled electric button and a 160-degree lie-flat function. From a technical implementation perspective, such designs need to address the following issues:

  1. Power System: A DC motor that fits the chair's dimensions must be selected to ensure sufficient torque to support human weight, while matching a reduction gear set to control rotation or tilt speed.
  2. Structural Reinforcement: During handmade production, the chair frame needs to be reinforced, such as adding metal brackets or carbon fiber plates at key load-bearing points (e.g., the connection between the chair back and seat surface) to prevent deformation due to uneven force during electric adjustment.
  3. Control Module: A simple circuit board needs to be integrated to connect the motor, battery, and button switch, achieving the 'one-button lie-flat' function. Some cases may use wireless remote controls instead of physical buttons to enhance operational convenience.
  4. Safety Design: Limit switches need to be installed to prevent excessive backward tilting of the chair back, and the motor should be wrapped with insulating material to avoid electric shock risks, while ensuring the battery compartment is sealed to prevent liquid infiltration.

It should be noted that handmaking an electric office chair requires relatively high skills and tools, including basic circuit soldering, metalworking, and material mechanics knowledge. If inexperienced, it is recommended to start with simple rotation functions and gradually upgrade to tilt adjustments, or refer to existing open-source designs to reduce trial-and-error costs.
