DIY Wooden Office Chair

Admin October 19, 2026

DIY wooden office chairs require a combination of carpentry skills and ergonomic design. You can refer to the following steps and creative adjustments to achieve personalized production:

1. Design Phase: Clarify Function and Structure

  • Base Frame: Refer to the structure of a "square-frame bench". Fix four square timbers (recommended size: 4ร—4 cm) into a rectangular base using mortise-and-tenon joints or corner brackets as chair leg supports. If height adjustment is needed, detachable wooden blocks or metal threaded sleeves can be added to the bottom of the chair legs.
  • Backrest and Armrests: According to ergonomics, the backrest should have an inclination angle of 100ยฐ-110ยฐ. You can cut an arc from a single piece of wood or enhance breathability by joining multiple wooden strips. The armrests can be designed as detachable and fixed to the outer sides of the chair legs with bolts for easy position adjustment.
  • Seat Optimization: Drawing inspiration from the design of a "stool with a circular seat", horizontally arrange and paste multiple thin wooden sheets (e.g., 1.5 cm thick) with woodworking glue. After curing under a heavy weight for 24 hours, cut them into a circular or rectangular seat to enhance load-bearing capacity and comfort.

2. Material and Tool Preparation

  • Wood Selection: It is recommended to use hardwoods (such as oak or walnut) or pine (lower cost). Ensure there are no cracks or insect infestations. If using scrap wood blocks, pre-screen for matching sizes.
  • Tool List: Electric saw/hand saw (for cutting wood), electric drill (for drilling holes), sandpaper (gradually sanding from 80 to 400 grit), woodworking glue, corner brackets/mortise-and-tenon tools, paint or wood wax oil (for protective treatment).

3. Production Process

  • Step 1: Cut and Assemble the Frame
Cut the chair legs and crossbeams according to the design dimensions and fix them into a rectangular base using mortise-and-tenon joints or corner brackets. If stability needs to be enhanced, cross-support wooden strips can be added to the inner sides of the chair legs.
  • Step 2: Install the Seat and Backrest
Fix the cured seat onto the top of the frame with wood screws. Connect the backrest to the rear side of the chair legs using hinges or bolts to ensure adjustable angles.
  • Step 3: Add Armrests and Details
Cut the armrest wooden boards and sand the edges. Fix them to the outer sides of the chair legs with bolts. Referring to the "hidden cup holder" idea, you can cut a slot in the inner side of the armrest to embed a small cup holder or add modern functions such as USB charging ports.
  • Step 4: Sanding and Protection
Sand all contact surfaces from coarse to fine grit sandpaper, focusing on edge chamfering to avoid scratches. Finally, apply 2-3 coats of wood wax oil or varnish to enhance water resistance and aesthetics.

4. Safety and Comfort Adjustments

  • Load-Bearing Test: After assembly, have individuals of different weights sit on the chair to check for any wobbling in the frame. Reinforce the connections if necessary.
  • Ergonomic Optimization: Adjust the seat height according to the user's height (usually 45-50 cm). The curvature of the backrest should fit the lumbar curve, and a detachable lumbar support cushion can be added.
  • Environmental Considerations: Use water-based woodworking glue and low-VOC paints to reduce formaldehyde emissions.
