DIY Wooden Office Chair

Admin October 10, 2026

Currently, there is no complete ready-made plan for a 'DIY wooden office chair', but the design can be adjusted by combining the structural creativity of existing cases with office needs. Here are the key ideas and steps as a supplement:

1. Clarify the core functional requirements of the office chair
The office chair needs to meet the requirements of long-term sitting comfort, structural stability, and ergonomic adaptability. Focus on designing a backrest that conforms to the body's curves (such as a slight arc), a seat surface with adjustable height (requiring reserved installation positions for the height-adjustment mechanism), and sturdy chair legs (to avoid the risk of tipping over). If multifunctionality is required, refer to the hidden cup holder or bottle opener design in Case 1, but ensure that it does not affect the overall stability.

2. Build the basic frame by referring to Case 2 and Case 3

  • Chair leg and crossbeam structure: Adopt the 'square frame' idea from Case 2. Use four square pieces of wood (recommended size: 4cm ร— 4cm) to form rectangular chair legs fixed with mortise-and-tenon joints or metal corner brackets. Connect two long wooden boards horizontally as crossbeams to enhance anti-tipping ability.
  • Reinforcement method: Refer to the diagonal brace design in Case 3. Add 45-degree diagonal wooden strips (thickness of more than 2cm) at the connections between the chair legs and crossbeams, and fix them with screws or wooden nails to improve load-bearing capacity.

3. Make the seat surface and backrest

  • Seat surface: Select a solid wood board with a thickness of 1.5-2cm (such as oak or pine), and cut it into a shape that conforms to the curve of the buttocks (width of about 40-50cm). Round the edges to avoid pricking. If elasticity is required, install elastic webbing or spring structures under the seat surface.
  • Backrest: Design an arc-shaped backrest board according to the curve of the human spine (height of about 50-60cm). Connect the bottom to the seat surface with hinges or mortise-and-tenon joints to achieve an adjustable angle function (requiring additional installation of a gas rod or manual adjustment device).

4. Detail optimization and safety treatment

  • Edge treatment: All wooden edges need to be sanded from 80-grit to 320-grit sandpaper step by step to ensure smoothness without burrs.
  • Anti-slip and stability: Stick anti-slip rubber pads at the bottom of the chair legs to prevent sliding on smooth floors. If the chair legs are relatively high (such as with a caster design), add a central support column or a five-star base.
  • Surface treatment: Apply 3-4 coats of wood wax oil or varnish to isolate moisture and improve durability. Allow sufficient drying time between each coat.

5. Supplementary list of tools and materials
Prepare an electric drill, a jigsaw, a sander, wood glue, screws/wooden nails, metal corner brackets, anti-slip pads, etc. The materials are mainly solid wood boards. Prioritize wood with a qualified dryness level (moisture content of 8%-12%) to avoid cracking later.

Note: If you lack woodworking experience, it is recommended to first make a 1:1 paper model to test the size rationality, or start with a simple bench (such as in Case 2) and gradually upgrade the functions.
