DIY Office Chair with Wooden Strips

Admin October 19, 2026

There are several methods to DIY an office chair using wooden strips, including woven wooden chairs, solid wooden bench chairs (to be improved), simple small wooden chairs (brief steps), and wooden chairs (detailed steps). Here are the specific introductions:

Woven Wooden Chair: First, mark each wooden strip and divide it into three segments. Interweave them according to the marked positions, and glue them together once the middle is fully woven. After fixing the heads of the wooden strips, bend them. Since wooden strips are less flexible than bamboo strips, they need to be heated at high temperatures to make bending easier. For the bent backrest part, nail a wooden board on one side and do the same on the other side. Add weights in the front and soften it with high heat until it is vertical. Do the same for the other three sides. After bending, nail two wooden boards on each side for reinforcement. Cut off the excess wooden strips, make the backrest, and fix it to the main body with a nail gun. Fix the bottom with wood, integrate the four sides, cut off the excess wooden strips, sand the burrs around the edges, and then spray with varnish.

Solid Wooden Bench Chair: Place a wooden board at each end of two wooden boards, one long and one short, and then nail them tightly with iron nails to fix them. Flip the frame over and nail a long wooden board as a diagonal brace with iron nails. However, this method does not explain in detail how to form the complete structure of an office chair, such as the specific production and connection methods of the seat and backrest parts. Further exploration and improvement can be made on this basis, such as adding a seat wooden board, fixing it to the frame with an appropriate connection method, and designing and making the backrest part.

Simple Small Wooden Chair: Prepare small wooden strips and small wooden boards. You can refer to relevant tutorials for production, but the tutorial does not elaborate on the specific production steps. It is speculated that you may need to first build the frame structure of the chair, determine the positions and connection methods of parts such as the chair legs and seat supports, and then gradually add components such as the seat and backrest. Specific operations may involve cutting, sanding, and fixing.

Wooden Chair: Collect materials such as 2x2 wooden strips and 1x4 wooden strips. First, cut both sides open, including specific lengths of 2x2-inch materials and 1x4 wooden boards, and split them into two segments along the length. Then assemble the sides, drill holes at the corresponding positions, apply glue, and insert the tenons into the holes to assemble the two sides of the chair. Next, prepare for the connection by cutting the wooden boards, cutting out the seat and making notches at the corners, drilling 1/4-inch holes in the 1x4 wooden board on the long side edge, aligning it with the seat piece and drilling holes, and drilling center guide holes in the short and long posts. After that, repair the chair backrest by applying glue to the wooden board and inserting the tenons, inserting it into the chair back, and waiting for the glue to dry. Then insert the backrest/seat combination, apply glue, and fix the seat. Insert deck screws through the plywood into the center of the front post. Ensure that everything is fixed in place, glue and fix the apron, insert deck screws, use corner braces inside the chair to strengthen the connection. Finally, sand the surface to prepare it for staining or painting, or sand the edges smoothly and then paint the wood.
