There are three common methods for DIYing an office chair, which you can choose based on your needs and hands-on skills:
Simple Homemade Folding Chair
This method is suitable for those with some woodworking skills and a pursuit of low cost. Material Selection: You'll need a piece of woodworking board, ensuring its size meets the basic requirements of the seat; masking tape for surface decoration and assisting in drawing; hinges for connecting parts to enable folding functionality; and tools such as a hole puncher and sandpaper for processing. Production Steps: First, cover the surface of the woodworking board with masking tape and draw the designed pattern on it with a pen. When drawing, use the tools properly to ensure the pattern is neat and accurate. If the pattern is unclear, you can pause or take a screenshot for further study. After drawing the pattern, cut it out with tools and then divide it into several parts along the curve. Next, remove the masking tape and sand the edges of each part to make them smooth and avoid scratches. After that, assemble the parts together, punch small circular holes with a hole puncher, and install the hinges. Flip the seat over and continue installing the hinges to secure it. Open the chair to find the support points and mark them, then use tools to create two corner holes so that the chair can be stably locked in place.
GL8 Seat Modification into an Office Chair
This is suitable for those who pursue comfort and functionality and have some hands-on skills. Material Preparation: Find a GL8 middle-row seat on platforms like Xianyu. Pay attention to distinguishing between the 652t and 653t models as the base molds may differ. Prepare an adapter plate, which can be purchased ready-made or made by punching holes in a steel plate yourself. You'll also need a swivel chair base with universal wheels. Modification Steps: Fix the adapter plate between the seat and the swivel chair base. If the seat has functions like USB charging, connect the wires properly. This modification plan is inexpensive, with the total cost possibly controlled at around 210 yuan, such as 150 yuan for the seat, 40 yuan for the adapter plate and punching, and 20 yuan for screws and nuts. If you use an idle swivel chair base, the cost will be even lower. Moreover, the seat comes with practical functions like a USB charging port, has high comfort and adjustability, and can be laid flat. However, the overall sitting height may be relatively high after modification.
Lego Office Chair DIY
This is suitable for Lego enthusiasts or children to participate in making. Material Preparation: Take out three blackboards and tighten the screws to serve as the main body of the chair, and then prepare four wheels. Production Steps: First, stack two more blackboards on top to increase the height of the chair body. Then, evenly distribute and install the four wheels on the four legs, placing one at each corner. In this way, you can build an office chair that can rotate 360 degrees and has a seat with wheels.
