Distance Behind Office Chair

Admin October 11, 2026

The required distance behind an office chair varies depending on the specific usage scenario and needs, typically ranging from 45 centimeters to over 150 centimeters. It can be categorized into the following situations:

1. Daily Sitting Posture Requirements During daily office work or study, to ensure comfort, sufficient space should be reserved behind the chair to prevent the back from directly touching the wall or other objects. It is generally recommended to maintain a distance of one to one-and-a-half fists (about 10-15 centimeters) between the back and the chair back, and the distance from the chair back to the obstacle behind should be at least 45 centimeters. This distance can meet basic sitting posture adjustment needs and avoid physical discomfort or frequent chair movement due to insufficient space.

2. Office Chair Design Considerations From the perspective of chair functional design, to ensure that users can fully stretch their legs or adjust their sitting posture, the activity space behind the chair should be controlled within 90 centimeters. For example, when the chair reclines or rotates, sufficient allowance should be left behind to avoid colliding with obstacles and to prevent space wastage.

3. Modern Office Environment Standards

  • Standard Office Chair Rotation Radius: The rotation radius of an ordinary office chair is usually 600-750 millimeters (i.e., 60-75 centimeters). Therefore, when customizing office space, at least 900 millimeters (90 centimeters) of backward space should be reserved for each seat to ensure that personnel can move freely or rotate the chair without obstruction.
  • Seat Spacing in Open Office Areas: To avoid mutual interference when people walk around and to meet fire exit requirements, it is recommended to maintain a seat spacing of 1200-1500 millimeters (1.2-1.5 meters). This range can ensure smooth passage while maintaining the relative independence of individual work areas.
  • Management-Level Private Offices: For large seats such as genuine leather executive chairs, a larger activity space should be reserved. It is recommended that the surrounding space be at least 1500 millimeters (1.5 meters) or more to accommodate the rotation, reclining, and other functions of high-end seats and to reflect space comfort and management hierarchy differences.

Summary: In ordinary scenarios, 45-90 centimeters can meet basic needs, while modern office design requires adjustments based on seat type and usage scenario. For open areas, 1.2-1.5 meters is recommended, and for private offices, more than 1.5 meters is needed.
