Dismantling Office Chair Wheels

Admin October 09, 2026

There are several main methods for dismantling office chair wheels:

Method 1: Using needle-nose pliers to pry
This is a relatively common operation method, suitable for situations where the connection between the wheel and the bracket is loose. First, prepare a pair of needle-nose pliers and insert its tip into the gap between the wheel and the bracket. Slowly pry along the edge of the wheel, using the principle of leverage to separate the wheel from the bracket. During operation, be careful to control the force to avoid deforming the wheel or the bracket due to excessive force. If the wheel's snap fastener is tight, try prying from different angles multiple times to gradually loosen the connection.

Method 2: Using a flat-head tool to remove the snap ring rod
Some office chair wheels are fixed with a snap ring rod and require a flat-head screwdriver or a special tool for removal. Insert the tool into the gap between the snap ring rod and the wheel, and pry with force perpendicular to the axial direction of the wheel to make the snap ring rod come out of the fixing groove. This step requires a relatively large amount of force. If female users have difficulty operating, they can seek help from others. After removal, the wheel can be taken off directly. Note that the snap ring rod may be rusted due to long-term use. Before prying, you can spray a small amount of lubricant (such as WD-40) to reduce resistance.

Method 3: Knocking to loosen after laying the chair down
For wheels with stubborn connections, you can lay the entire chair down so that the wheels face upwards. Use a flat-head screwdriver to lightly tap the contact surface between the wheel and the bracket, loosening the connection through vibration. If the wheel still does not come off, you can switch to a hammer or other tool and lightly tap the tail of the screwdriver to use the impact force to completely separate the wheel. During operation, place a soft cloth or a wooden board under the wheel to prevent direct knocking from causing the wheel to break or damaging the floor.

Precautions:

  1. Before dismantling, observe the type of wheel. Different structures (such as snap-fit and threaded) require corresponding methods.
  2. Wear gloves during operation to avoid scratching your fingers.
  3. If the wheel cannot be dismantled due to aging or damage, you can try heating it (such as with a hairdryer) to soften the plastic before operating.
  4. After dismantling, check whether there are any foreign objects remaining in the bracket hole to ensure smooth installation of the new wheel.
