Dismantling Office Chair
Admin October 08, 2026
Exercise caution when dismantling an office chair, paying special attention to the connection between the gas rod and the chair legs. Here are the specific steps and precautions:

I. Separation of the Seat and Gas Rod
- Detach the Backrest: If the backrest is fixed with screws or clips, use a screwdriver or wrench to loosen the connecting parts and remove it from the seat.
- Adjust the Height of the Gas Spring: Raise the gas spring to its highest position to ensure the internal piston is fully extended, reducing resistance during disassembly.
- Shake and Remove: Hold the bottom of the seat firmly with one hand and press the height adjustment lever of the gas spring (usually located beneath the seat) with the other hand. Gradually separate the seat from the gas rod by gently shaking it side to side. If the connection is too tight, try lightly tapping the edge of the seat with a rubber mallet to help loosen it.
II. Separation of the Gas Rod and Chair Legs
- Invert the Chair Legs: Place the chair legs upside down on a stable surface to prevent tipping during disassembly.
- Tap to Separate: Use a rubber mallet to directly tap the connection between the gas rod and the chair legs, using the vibration to loosen the clips. If you don't have a rubber mallet, place a wooden board on top of the gas rod and tap the board with a regular hammer to avoid directly striking and damaging the gas rod.
- Check for Residual Parts: After separation, check inside the chair legs for any plastic retaining rings or metal washers, and remove them to prevent interference with subsequent installation.
III. Dismantling Other Parts
- Loosening Screws: Parts such as the armrests and headrest are usually fixed with screws. Reverse the installation order and use the appropriate screwdriver to loosen each screw one by one.
- Avoid Excessive Force: If the screws are rusted or stuck, spray a small amount of rust remover (such as WD-40) to lubricate them. Wait 5-10 minutes before attempting to disassemble again. Do not forcefully twist them to avoid stripping the threads.
IV. Tools and Safety Tips
- Tool Selection: Prioritize using specialized tools such as rubber mallets and screwdriver sets, and avoid using metal hammers to directly strike plastic parts.
- Protective Measures: Wear gloves during disassembly to prevent cuts from sharp edges. If the gas rod contains high-pressure gas, release the pressure slowly before operating.
- Dismantle Only When Necessary: Unless for repair or relocation purposes, it is advisable to keep the office chair intact as much as possible. Frequent disassembly may lead to issues such as gas rod leakage and deformation of the chair legs.
Summary: Dismantling an office chair should be done in the order of 'outside first, then inside; easy first, then difficult', focusing on handling the clip connection between the gas rod and the chair legs, and using tools as needed. If excessive resistance is encountered or parts are damaged during the process, it is recommended to contact a professional repair technician for assistance.
