Dismantling Office Chair

Admin October 08, 2026

You can refer to the following steps and methods for dismantling an office chair:

Step 1: Understand the Components of an Office Chair
An office chair typically consists of components such as chair legs, casters, a base, a seat, a gas lift, a backrest, armrests, and a headrest. There may be structural differences among chairs of different models, but the core components are generally the same. Identifying how each component is connected (e.g., screwed, snapped, or inserted with a gas lift) is a prerequisite for dismantling. You can first observe the chair's appearance or consult the instruction manual to confirm its structural features.

Step 2: Separate the Backrest from the Seat
The backrest and seat are usually connected by screws or snaps. If they are screwed, use a screwdriver of the corresponding type (e.g., Phillips or flat-head) to loosen the screws counterclockwise. Be sure to keep the removed screws to prevent loss. If they are snapped together, gently press the snap location or use a plastic pry bar to assist in separation, avoiding excessive force that could break plastic parts. After separation, place the backrest separately to avoid confusion with other components.

Step 3: Dismantle the Base and Gas Lift

  1. Base Dismantling: Raise the gas lift to its highest position to increase the operating space. Hold the seat firmly with one hand and press the height adjustment lever (usually located under the seat) with the other hand while gently rocking the seat. Use the lever principle to separate the base from the gas lift. If the base is stuck, you can increase the rocking amplitude slightly, but control the force to avoid damaging the components.
  2. Gas Lift Dismantling: Invert the chair legs (with the casters facing up) and gently tap the connection between the gas lift and the chair legs with a rubber mallet. A rubber mallet reduces the impact force on metal parts. If you don't have a rubber mallet, you can place a wooden board on top of the gas lift and tap the board with a regular hammer to protect the components through cushioning. Tap evenly to avoid tilting the gas lift, which could make dismantling difficult.

Step 4: Handle Other Components

  • Armrests and Headrest: If the armrests are screwed, dismantle them according to the method in Step 1. If they are snapped, simply press the snaps to separate them. The headrest is usually connected by pins or screws, so choose the corresponding method based on its structure for dismantling.
  • Casters: Some casters are directly inserted into the holes in the chair legs. You can use your hand or a tool (e.g., a screwdriver) to gently pry the edge of the caster to loosen it and then pull it out. If the casters are screwed, you need to remove the screws first before taking off the casters.

Precautions:

  • Prepare tools (screwdrivers, rubber mallets, pry bars, etc.) before dismantling and clean the work area to prevent the loss of small parts.
  • Wear gloves during operation to prevent metal parts from scratching your fingers.
  • If you encounter components that are difficult to dismantle (e.g., rusty screws), you can spray a small amount of lubricant (such as WD-40) to assist in loosening. Do not force dismantling, which could damage the components.
