Dismantling Office Chair Screws

Admin October 16, 2026

The following steps can be followed to dismantle the screws of an office chair. Different methods should be selected according to different parts, and tools should be prepared and parts stored properly:

I. Tool Preparation Most office chair armrests are fixed with hexagon socket screws, so it is necessary to prepare hexagon socket screwdrivers of corresponding specifications in advance. If the screws are rusted or tightly fixed, a hand drill with a hexagon socket screwdriver bit can be used to improve disassembly efficiency through electric rotation, but the speed should be controlled to avoid slipping and damaging the screws or the chair surface. For ordinary cross or flathead screws at the connection between the chair back and the seat, corresponding screwdrivers should be prepared. In addition, prepare a small box to store the removed screws and prevent them from being lost.

II. Armrest Dismantling

  1. Turn the office chair over with the armrest facing up and observe the type of screws at the connection between the armrest and the seat.
  2. Insert the corresponding hexagon socket screwdriver into the screw head and rotate it counterclockwise to loosen it. If the screw is too tight, you can gently tap the area around the screw head with the screwdriver to break any possible rust layer or glue fixation.
  3. After completely unscrewing the screw, separate the armrest from the seat. Note that there may be hidden buckles or connectors under the armrest, and the armrest should be gently shaken to assist in disassembly.

III. Separation of the Chair Back and the Seat

  1. If the chair back and the seat are fixed with screws, first place the chair upright and observe the position of the connection. Usually, the connection point is located at the junction of the rear part of the seat and the bottom of the chair back, and there may be two to four screws.
  2. Use the corresponding screwdriver (such as a cross or flathead screwdriver) to unscrew the screws counterclockwise. Note that the screws may be long and need to be completely unscrewed.
  3. When separating, hold the chair back with one hand and the seat with the other hand, and slowly pull them apart to avoid damaging the connectors due to excessive force. If there are plastic buckles at the connection, press the buckle release mechanism simultaneously.

IV. Dismantling of the Rear Structure

  1. The rear part of an office chair may involve fixed screws for components such as the gas lift and the five-star base. If the gas lift needs to be dismantled, first find the fixed screws at its connection with the seat (usually large cross screws), and unscrew them to separate the seat from the gas lift.
  2. The connection between the five-star base and the gas lift may be fixed by threads or screws. If it is a threaded connection, rotate the five-star base counterclockwise to unscrew it; if it is fixed by screws, use the corresponding tool to unscrew the screws.

V. Precautions

  1. During the disassembly process, if the screw slips (i.e., the screw head is worn round), you can place a rubber band or a thin cloth between the screwdriver bit and the screw head to increase friction and then try to rotate it.
  2. Avoid using excessive force or inappropriate tools to prevent damage to the screw head or scratches on the chair surface.
  3. The removed screws should be stored by part to facilitate quickly finding the corresponding screws during subsequent assembly.
