Dismantling Office Chair Legs

Admin October 09, 2026

You can refer to the following three methods to dismantle office chair legs, and choose the appropriate method according to the chair's structure:

Method 1: Dismantling by Shaking the Seat Cushion

This method is suitable for conventional structures where the seat cushion is fixed to the five-star base with snaps or friction. The operation steps are as follows:

  1. Place the chair on a flat surface and step on the bottom of the five-star base with one foot to ensure the chair does not slide or tip over during dismantling.
  2. Hold both sides of the seat cushion with both hands and shake it left and right to break the snaps or friction between the cushion and the base, while lifting the cushion upwards. Keep the shaking force even to avoid damaging the parts due to excessive force.
  3. If the cushion does not loosen after shaking, try changing the grip position (such as the front and back sides) and repeat the above shaking and lifting actions. For some chairs, the snap positions may vary due to design differences, so try to release the fixation from multiple angles.
  4. Continue the operation until the cushion is completely separated from the five-star base. This method does not require tools but requires patience to adjust the angle and force.

Method 2: Handling Flat Washer Snaps or Tapered Connections

This method is suitable for chairs with flat washer snaps or tapered press-fit structures at the bottom of the central column. The operation steps are as follows:

  1. Turn the chair upside down so that the five-star base faces upwards and observe the structure at the bottom of the central column. If there is a flat washer snap (usually a metal ring-shaped part), use a screwdriver or needle-nose pliers to remove it, and then pull out the old five-star base and replace it with a new one.
  2. If there is no snap at the bottom of the central column and the connection between the five-star base and the steel column is tapered, it means they are fixed by weight press-fit. In this case, use a hammer to lightly tap the edge of the five-star base to separate it from the steel column by vibration. When tapping, place a soft cloth or a piece of wood under the five-star base to avoid direct tapping and surface damage.
  3. When installing a new five-star base, ensure that the tapered interfaces are aligned and press or tap them tightly together.

Method 3: Separating the Chair Back from the Gas Lift

This method is suitable for office chairs with a pneumatic height adjustment function. The operation steps are as follows:

  1. First, separate the chair back from the seat cushion (for some chairs, you need to loosen the fixing screws), and then raise the gas lift to the highest position.
  2. Fix the seat cushion with one hand and press the lifting lever of the gas lift with the other hand while shaking the seat cushion several times to use the lever principle to detach the base from the gas lift.
  3. If the base is still stuck, turn the chair feet upside down and tap the connection between the gas lift and the five-star base with a rubber hammer. If you do not have a rubber hammer, you can place a piece of wood between the hammerhead and the part to reduce the impact force through cushioning.
  4. When dismantling the gas lift, note that there may be high-pressure gas inside. Avoid using sharp tools to pry it forcibly to prevent parts from flying out and causing injury.

Precautions:

  • Wear gloves before dismantling to prevent fingers from being scratched by parts.
  • If the chair has a complex structure or the parts are severely aged, it is recommended to contact professional maintenance personnel for handling.
  • Keep the working environment clean during the operation to avoid losing small parts.
