Dismantling Office Chair Leather
Admin October 11, 2026
Dismantling office chair leather requires selecting the appropriate method based on the type of chair. Here are the common steps:

I. Dismantling Method for Genuine Leather Office Swivel Chairs
Genuine leather office chairs typically have complex structures. First, separate the seat cushion from the chassis, and then handle the leather.
- Dismantling the Seat Cushion: Turn the chair upside down on a flat surface. Use a rubber mallet to evenly tap around the metal rim at the bottom of the seat cushion to loosen the connection between the rim and the cushion. Then, use your hands to pry the rim upwards and repeat the operation until the base is completely loose.
- Separating the Chassis: Use a screwdriver to remove the upper seat screws connecting the seat cushion to the chassis. At this point, the chassis may still be connected to the hydraulic lift rod. Continue to gently tap the edge of the metal chassis with a rubber mallet while holding the hydraulic lift rod steady with one hand and stepping on the chassis with the other foot. Use leverage to completely separate the seat cushion from the chassis.
- Removing the Leather: If the leather is fixed to the seat frame with snaps or glue, check the connection method. For snap-fixed leather, use a flat tool (such as a plastic pry bar) to pry along the edge. For glue-fixed leather, slowly tear it while using a hot air gun to heat and soften the glue to avoid tearing the leather.
II. Simple Dismantling Method for Ordinary Office Chairs
Ordinary office chairs have relatively simple structures and usually fix the leather with wire or stitching.
- Dismantling the Bottom Fixing Points: Use pliers to remove each of the approximately ten wire-wrapped fixing points at the bottom of the seat cushion one by one. Be sure to keep the wires for subsequent reassembly.
- Separating the Seat Cushion from the Sponge: Take the seat cushion off the frame and strip away the internal sponge filling to expose the connection between the leather and the frame.
- Cutting the Stitching: Use scissors to cut along the stitching line between the leather and the frame. Be gentle to avoid scratching the frame or the leather. If the leather is fixed with rivets, use a drill or a special tool to remove the rivets.
Precautions:
- Wear protective gloves before operation to avoid being scratched by tools.
- For genuine leather materials, avoid using sharp tools to pry directly to prevent leaving permanent scratches.
- If you need to keep the leather after dismantling, it is recommended to mark the positions of each part for easy reassembly. If you need to replace it with new leather, measure the size of the original leather and leave a margin for stitching.
