Dismantling Office Chair Cylinder
Admin October 12, 2026
You can refer to the following methods for dismantling an office chair cylinder. Choose the appropriate method according to the actual situation and strictly follow safety regulations:

I. Pressing Method (Suitable for snap-ring fixed structures)
- Secure the chair: Place the chair upside down to ensure sufficient and stable operating space beneath the base.
- Locate the snap ring: Observe the inner side of the connection between the gas lift and the base to find the metal snap ring embedded in the groove (usually circular or C-shaped).
- Press to unlock: Use a slender tool (such as a small flat-head screwdriver, the tip of tweezers, or a ballpoint pen shell with the refill removed) to gently press inward on the gap or both sides of the snap ring. A clicking sound indicates that the snap ring has been released.
- Separate the components: While maintaining the pressure or confirming that the snap ring is released, use your hand to steadily pull the gas lift upward to separate it from the base.
II. Tapping Method (Suitable for tightly connected or rusted cases)
- Secure the chair: Place the chair upside down or on its side on a stable surface to prevent sliding.
- Tap evenly: Use a rubber mallet (preferred) or an ordinary hammer wrapped in a thick towel to tap evenly around the metal ring connecting the gas lift to the base (or seat). Avoid tapping at a single point to prevent deformation.
- Attempt to separate: After tapping a few rounds, hold the gas lift or base with one hand and continue tapping the connection while trying to pull it upward or shake it slightly from side to side. If the connection is too tight, apply lubricant (such as WD-40) to the gap and let it sit for 1-2 hours before continuing to tap.
III. Rotating Method (Suitable for threaded connection structures)
- Apply lubricant: Apply lubricant (such as engine oil or WD-40) to the threaded connection to reduce friction.
- Clamp and rotate: Use a pipe wrench (10-inch or 14-inch) or locking pliers to clamp the metal part of the gas lift rod (as close to the connection as possible) to avoid damaging the surface.
- Apply force and rotate: Rotate counterclockwise with force (usually reverse threads) while using your other hand or foot to hold the seat steady until the gas lift is unscrewed. This method may leave clamp marks and should only be used as a last resort.
IV. Safety Precautions
- Avoid brute force: Do not pry hard, continuously hammer, or dismantle under pressure to prevent damaging components or causing an explosion risk.
- Check the gas lift rod: If there is air leakage, deformation, or severe rust, replace it with a new one immediately. Do not attempt to repair it forcibly.
- Reinstall and test: After installation, ensure that the screws are tightened. Test the lifting and rotating functions for stability. Regularly clean and apply lubricant to extend the lifespan.
Tip: Inexperienced individuals are advised to contact professionals, especially when there is residual high-pressure gas inside the gas lift rod. Improper operation can lead to serious consequences.
