Dismantling Office Chair Casters

Admin October 16, 2026

Here are the methods for dismantling office chair casters:

Step 1: Prepare and Lay the Chair Down
Before dismantling, turn the office chair upside down so that the seat faces downward. This provides a more stable working space and prevents the seat fabric from being scratched due to force or tool operations. If the seat material is fragile, it is recommended to place a soft cloth or foam board between the seat and the ground to further protect the surface.

Step 2: Dismantle Different Types of Casters
Office chair casters are fixed in various ways, and the appropriate method should be selected according to the specific type:

  1. Snap-in Design
    These casters are fixed to the bracket with snaps. When dismantling, hold the caster bracket with your hand and gently pull it outward perpendicular to the bracket. If the caster is too tightly stuck, you can use a flat-head screwdriver for assistance: insert the tip of the screwdriver into the gap at the edge of the snap, place a soft cloth to avoid scratching the bracket surface, and slowly pry to loosen the snap, then try to pull out the caster.

  2. Round Rod Design
    The caster is connected to the bracket with a round rod. Simply pull the rod straight out with your hand; if there is significant resistance, insert a flat-head screwdriver into the gap between the rod and the bracket to pry, or use pliers to grip the base of the rod and gently tap the tail of the pliers with a hammer to loosen the rod through vibration. Control the force during operation to avoid deforming the rod or breaking the bracket.

  3. Hexagonal Screw Design
    Some casters are fixed with hexagonal screws. Use a hexagonal wrench of the corresponding size (usually 3mm or 4mm) to rotate the screw counterclockwise. Once the screw is completely unscrewed, the caster can be removed. If the screw is rusty, spray a small amount of lubricant (such as WD-40) and wait for 5 minutes before operating.

  4. Other Cases
    If the caster has no obvious fixing structure, use needle-nose pliers to grip the connection between the wheel and the bracket and gently pry it to the sides; or use a flat-head screwdriver to gently tap the edge of the wheel. Once it is loose, use a hammer or other tool to gently tap along the axis to completely detach the caster from the bracket. Place a soft cloth between the wheel and the tool when tapping to prevent surface damage.

Precautions

  • Observe the type of caster before dismantling to avoid using the wrong tool and causing damage;
  • Keep the movements steady during operation and avoid excessive force;
  • If the wheel is severely aged, it is recommended to replace it with a new one after dismantling to ensure safety in use.
