Dismantling Office Chair Casters

Admin October 16, 2026

The method for dismantling office chair casters varies depending on the type of wheel. Here are the specific steps:

I. Circular Rod-Type Wheels These wheels are typically inserted directly into the holes on the chair frame. When dismantling, first try to pull them out by hand. If they are difficult to remove due to increased friction from long-term use, you can use tools to assist:

  1. Flat-head Screwdriver Prying: Insert the tip of the screwdriver into the gap between the wheel and the chair interface, and gently pry to separate the wheel from the frame. Be sure to control the force to avoid scratching the chair surface.
  2. Pliers + Hammer Tapping: Use pliers to grip the metal rod of the wheel, and after securing it, lightly tap the handle of the pliers with a hammer to loosen the wheel through vibration. This method is suitable for wheels with thicker rods, and be sure to tap perpendicular to the axis of the rod.

II. Hexagonal Screw-Type Wheels These wheels are fixed to the frame with hexagonal screws and require a hexagonal wrench of the corresponding size for dismantling:

  1. Insert the hexagonal wrench into the screw head and turn it counterclockwise to loosen the screw. If the screw is rusted, you can spray a small amount of rust remover or lubricant to help loosen it.
  2. After completely unscrewing the screw, the wheel can be directly removed. If there is thread-locking compound in the screw hole, clean the residue after dismantling for subsequent installation.

III. General Dismantling Steps (Applicable to Most Wheels)

  1. Prepare Tools: Wrench, Phillips screwdriver, rubber mallet, hydraulic oil (optional), needle-nose pliers (optional).
  2. Flip the Chair: Turn the chair upside down so that the bottom is facing up, and lay a soft cloth or foam pad on the ground to prevent scratching the chair or the floor.
  3. Separate the Base from the Pull Rod: Use a wrench to unscrew the fixing screws of the gasket at the bottom of the chair, and gently pull the middle pull rod to separate the base. Note that the screws are small and should be properly stored to avoid loss.
  4. Dismantle the Wheel Screws: Use a thin Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the fixing screws on the wheels. If the screw head is worn, you can use a rubber gasket to increase friction or dip the tip of the screwdriver in a small amount of glue for temporary fixation.
  5. Loosen the Wheels: Gently tap the interface between the wheel and the frame with a rubber mallet to loosen the wheel through vibration. If the wheel is still tight, you can tap it a few times before trying to unscrew it again.
  6. Assisted Dismantling: If the wheel is stuck, you can apply a small amount of hydraulic oil at the interface for lubrication, or use needle-nose pliers to insert into the gap of the wheel and gently pry to assist in separation.

Precautions:

  • Avoid using excessive force when dismantling to prevent damage to the chair frame or wheel components.
  • If the wheel is difficult to dismantle, it is recommended to first check for hidden screws or snap-fit structures to avoid missing steps.
  • Use lubricant in moderation to avoid oil stains contaminating the chair or the floor.
