Dismantling Office Chair Casters

Admin October 13, 2026

You can refer to the following methods for dismantling office chair casters:

I. Direct Pulling or Rotational Pulling
Most office chair casters are designed with a plug-in structure, where the base and the wheels are fixed by metal or plastic clips. Vertical pulling is the basic operation: Fix the edge of the chair base with your foot, grip the caster firmly with both hands, and pull vertically upwards. If you encounter resistance, you can gently shake it left and right to assist. Some casters have a threaded structure and need to be unlocked by rotating them 90 degrees counterclockwise before pulling them out. This method is suitable for regular casters without obvious rust or jamming.

II. Using Tools for Assisted Dismantling
If direct pulling is difficult, you can use tools step by step:

  1. Prying the Plastic Clips: Insert a flat-head screwdriver into the gap between the caster and the base, and gently pry the plastic clips to loosen them. If you don't have enough strength, you can use pliers to grip the wheel axle and tap the top of the wheel lightly with a hammer to make it detach through vibration.
  2. Loosening the Wheel Structure: Use a flat-head screwdriver to tap the edge of the wheel lightly. After it becomes loose, switch to a hammer or other tools to tap it lightly along the axial direction to gradually separate the wheel from the base. Control the force during operation to avoid damaging the base or the wheel axle.

III. Using Lubricant to Soften the Clips
If the caster is jammed due to long-term disuse or dust accumulation, you can spray WD-40 lubricant on the joint and let it sit for 15 minutes to allow the lubricant to penetrate. The lubricant can soften the clips or rust, reducing friction and making subsequent pulling or prying easier. This method is especially suitable for cases where the plastic clips are aged or slightly rusted.

IV. Special Operations for Dealing with Rusty Clips
When the metal clips are severely rusted, forcing them open may cause them to break or scratch the base. It is recommended to use a rubber mallet: Gently tap the area around the connection to loosen the rust layer through vibration, and then try to pull or pry it. If the rust has penetrated deep into the axle hole, you can first lightly sand the surface of the axle with sandpaper to remove the rust layer before operating.

Operation Precautions

  1. Protective Measures: Wear cotton gloves to increase friction and prevent your hands from slipping; lay a soft cloth or an old towel on the ground to prevent the wheel from bouncing and scratching the floor.
  2. Check the Fixing Screws: The casters of some high-end gaming chairs are fixed with screws. You need to remove the screws with a screwdriver before dismantling the wheels.
  3. Avoid Violent Operations: Excessive force may cause the base to deform or the wheel axle to break, especially for plastic parts. If you still can't dismantle it after multiple attempts, it is recommended to contact a professional repair technician.
