Dismantling Office Chair Casters

Admin October 11, 2026

The method for dismantling office chair casters should be selected based on the type of caster. Here are the common types and their operating steps:

Snap-ring casters are the most common structure in modern office chairs. To dismantle them, hold the wheel with your hand, press it vertically downward and outward, and use the elastic deformation of the snap ring to make it detach from the metal sleeve of the chair leg. If it is difficult to operate with your bare hands, you can use a tool for assistance: insert the tip of a flat-head screwdriver or an old key into the gap on the side of the wheel, gently press against the inner side of the snap ring to help it loosen. Pay attention to the force applied during the operation to avoid damaging the snap ring or the sleeve.

Threaded casters are relatively simple to dismantle. Simply rotate the wheel counterclockwise to unscrew it from the threaded hole in the base of the chair leg. If the caster is stuck due to rust or deformation, first spray a small amount of lubricant (such as WD-40) into the joint between the wheel and the chair leg, wait a few minutes for the lubricant to penetrate, and then use needle-nose pliers to grip the root of the wheel axle, gently shake it left and right, and try to pull it outward. If the rust is severe, avoid forcing it to prevent the wheel axle from breaking.

Snap-fit casters require you to first turn the office chair upside down (with the seat facing down), hold the roller bracket with your hand, and gently pull the roller outward. If the roller is tightly stuck, you can use a flat-head screwdriver padded with a soft cloth (to avoid scratching the bracket) to gently pry the edge of the snap fit, making it loosen so that you can remove the roller. Keep the chair stable during the operation to prevent it from tipping over and causing accidental injuries.

Precautions:

  1. Before dismantling, check whether the gas rod of the chair is normal. If there are problems such as failure to lift or lower, air leakage, or abnormal noises, contact a professional for inspection and repair first to avoid dangers caused by gas rod failures.
  2. Choose a flat and open ground for the operation, clear the items on the chair, and keep it away from fire sources and sharp objects to prevent collisions or scratches during the dismantling process.
  3. During the dismantling process, it is strictly prohibited to use a hammer to strike, a tool to pry hard, or heat to dismantle the gas rod. Such operations may cause gas leakage or even a rod explosion, resulting in personal injuries.

Selecting the correct dismantling method and strictly following the operating specifications can ensure the safe and efficient replacement or repair of the casters.
